My friend has Nvidia Geforce 7900 and AMD 3700+ and he gets over 100fps (like 150fps)

I have AMD 4800 X2 and i had a single x1900XTX. I was getting only 75 FPS.... now i just added an X1900 Master card and i have crossfire enabled.

I get a 3dmark03 score of 29484 with no OC, a 3dmark05 score of 13700, and 3dmark06 of 9870.... WHY AM I GETTING ONLY 75PFS in CS... it doesn't make sense.

MOBO: ASUS A8R32MVP
Sound Card (using on board with latest Realtek Hd drivers)
Windows XP SP2 will all updates including hot fix for dual core processors
AMD Dual Core 4800X2 with latest AMD drivers and optimizer installed for Dual Core
ATI X1900XTX and X1900 CF with Crossfire enabled with 6.8 Catalyst drivers
Viewsonic 3ms 19in Monitor running at 1280X1024 at 75Hz max refresh rate.

Yes Vsnyc is off in ATI CP and in CS Source (but i know what your thinking... its almost as if it is still on?)

This is a fresh load so nothing else is loaded. No Quicktime, no Codecs, no AntiVirus, no Spyware crap... nothing.... Just Drivers, Windows with all updates, and CS Source.

Please help cause this is driving me nuts.....

It's obviously your refresh rate, try lowering it and see what happens. Are you really so stupid you don't see the relationsip in 75FPS and a 75MHz refresh rate? Either way, who gives a shit, your performance is fine and no one needs more than 60FPS anyway.

Also, WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU GET CROSSFIRE FOR A CRAPPY MONITER LIKE THAT??!?!?!?!? You just spent $400 on an X1900 master card for a 20% improvement in games, you're messed up man. One X1900 is overkill for 12x10 anyway.

The funny part is that I have one 7900GT and I get close to your 3DMark scores

LOL your right... trust me.. the peformance is amazing... i am defiantely getting over 75 visually... it just isn't the same though cause my friend is an NVIDIA fan and he is making fun of my setup. Yet... he can only put out a 28K score on 3dmark03 with his dual core 7950 (which will probabaly kick my cards ars in newer games but by then DX10 cards will be out ) ....

Anyways... No.. .not stupid... i realize that corrilation too which is why i posted both those facts... I was hoping someone could enlighten me as to why my drivers are allowing it to synch with Refesh rate when my vsnyc is off?

It has to be a setting in either CS Source or my ATI CP..... There is no way i am going to settle for my friend to run his mouth off at me LOL.

LOL you added.. okay yes.. your right about the monitor. Trust me i know. I am actually planning on buying a 23 or 30 inch around Christmas which is why i am setting up my machine now. See... you have to know me personally... i got married a year ago and my wife wants a baby... don't get me wrong.. i want one too, but i know i won't be able to splurge for a while. SO... yep... i went all out :) So the 23/30 inch monitor will be my last mod for a while....

okay... so see i am not that completely insane

OH yeah.. my master card only cost me 250.00 on ebay :) GOD BLESS EBAY! so for a 200 dollar mod i went from 18000 03 score to 29000 03 score :)

Ok, I don't hate you anymore...LMAO, you had a good excuse for everything, I'm just pissed at stupid like that.

No worries man...LOL i can see how my setup looks completely F'd up... id question my own sanity too if i setup crossfire for a 19inch viewsonic monitor LOL. On a brighter note... i may have solved my problem... i am pretty sure i have Temp AA on.... i'll confirm when i get home

Wait for Vertical Sync
Vsync limits you to a framerate equal to or a multiple of your refresh rate. If your vsync is set to 85Hz, your screen can only be updated 85 times per second, or 42.5, or 21.25, .... Disabling vsyncallows your monitor to display frames as fast as your card can render them. The disadvantage is that you may see some "tearing" of the on-screen image if the video card supplies a new frame before the monitor finishes reading and displaying the previous one from the video card's memory, so you end up with frame A on the top half of the screen, and frame B on the bottom half. AFAIK, current video cards are double-buffered: the back buffer is where the video card creates the current frame, and the front buffer is where a completed back buffer frame is flipped. The monitor gets its image from the front buffer. I believe vsync prevents the front buffer from being written to unless a complete frame can be transmitted at the designated refresh rate interval, potentially leading to the monitor displaying the same frame for multiple screen refreshes, but avoiding the problem of multiple rendered frames being displayed in a single screen redraw.

Vsync is desirable from an image quality point of view, but not from a smooth frame rate point of view. The solution is triple buffering, which takes up more memory but adds an extra (front) buffer for a vsync'ed monitor to draw from if the video card hasn't rendered a new frame in time for a new screen redraw, thus eliminating the multiple-of-refresh-rate-framerate problem.

TruForm
Truform is a technology made by ATi that, if the game supports it, it will detail things better making them smoother, but with a performance hit due to more polygon rendering.

Temporal Anti-aliasing:
Good info from WildStyle!

Quote:
Temporal AA is a way for ATi to allow antialiasing "for free" so to speak, i.e., little or no performance hit. What it does is that it takes different, programmable samples for AA and varies them by frame. As you may know, most MSAA (multisample antialiasing) techniques are based on one sample pattern based on the level (2x, 4x, 6x). What temporal AA does is use a slightly different sample for each frame (2 or 3 samples). Since it changes each frame, it should not be noticeable if your frames/sec is high enough - more on this in the next paragraph. The next result is that you can use regular AA with temporal AA to achieve much greater levels of AA with only the frame rate hit of non-programmable/standard AA.

There are some drawbacks to temporal AA:

* Vsync is required to be on, or should I say, is forced on if you enable temporal AA. For some users, this may be a problem.

* A relatively high frame rate is required to avoid flickering (>= 60 frames/sec). On the flip side, you can set a frame rate threshold. If the frame rate drops below the chosen rate, temporal AA turns itself off.

* It is only present in D3D as of Catalyst 4.6, but it should be available in OpenGL when it is formally released in 4.7. You can activate with 3rd party tools such as Radlinker.

Try forcing AFR mode from the CCC driver panel... it might be in scissor mode for that game, which is known to not be the best performing multi-gpu rendering mode.

One thing, do you have a cfg file or autoexec.cfg file in the main folder? if so delete it and redo the settings, you probably have maxfps set to 75.

try this at this console:

cl_fpsmax 100 <-- (or replace 100 with any value you want, like 10000000).

75 MHz is 75,000,000 hertz, kiddo. That's 75,000,000 frames per second. What's the relationship between 75 fps and 75 MHz supposed to be?

Some like cake, some like gravy. Some like 60 fps, others like 75 fps. It is not your place to determine who needs what frame rates.

His call, not yours. He could buy forty-seven X1900s if he so pleases. Again, it's not your place to determine how anyone spends their money.

Quit harassing. This forum is not here for you to insult people.

[snip].

probably because of the doom3 cap of (typically) 60fps when vsync is enabled.. that does cap the frame rate at the top of your refresh rate.. I think that got peeps thinking that refresh = max fps for some reason.. that would be my guess.

Actually, I think the Doom 3 engine has a 60 fps cap regardless of whether vertical sync is enabled or not, due to the fixed 60 Hz tic rate. I think that's how it works, because I'm not terribly sure if the fixed tic was actually enabled in the shipping version. Enabling the cvar makes things a little, well, "wonky". Anyway, my comment was more of a jab at his misuse of "MHz" rather than a serious question :)

Yes i do, but there was no setting in there for Max Frames that i recal. I'll check it again. My friend runs the same cfg on his Nvidia box so.... i have to say its probably not that...but i'll check to be sure

I think cs source looks pretty nice at 75fps with vsync.

Your right... i mean... it looks fantastic... so yeah.. .visually nothing is bothering... its just that i don't understand why the counter is showing 75fps... when others are getting over 100.... i'll try the FPS command and see if that works...

Its more curiosity and "the point".... i have a crossfire setup and a game that barely pushes it... why is it restricted to 75fps... that is the mystery...

OKay... didn't even know about this... how do i even check and go about doing this?
Thanks for the suggestion btw

okay.... from everything i just read about forcing AFR mode... its on cause i have the cat AI turned on and set to Advanced.....

vsync usually makes for some very sloppy feeling mouse movement.

Anyways crossfire for 1280x1024 seems like a waste. Try playing on your HDTV or something.

So, your suggestion is that he should move from 1280x1024 to an HDTV at 1280x720 to better take advantage of CrossFire?

Or maybe he was insisting upon 1920x1080 to take advantage of crossfire.
The wide field of view tends to slow graphics cards down more anyway.

Ohhhh- . . .yeah, you're right. It's FEAR which I saw capping the fps at 60 with vsync on vs. having it off.. anyways, it's all good. :)

omg only 75 fps! wow. So your complaining, even tho your getting 75 fps? I play BF2 at 20-25 fps and so you see me complaining ;) no you don't. So stop your bitchin asshole!

Wow I dont see you here much longer talking like that

Is this 75FPS in the stress test or ingame? If its ingame then thats normal most likely. On my setup, I maxed out all the settings, and got a 99FPS score in the stress test. Ingame I get like 40-50FPS.

If thats not the case I would try that cl_fpsmax 100 trick.

Alright... problem fixed...

It was a combination of 2 things.

1) Temporal AA must be turned of... turning it on is like turning on Vsnyc
2) Had to set afinity to 1 processor core....How to do this.

a) Start Game
b) Alt - Tab back to desktop
c) Opent Task Manager
d) Right click on Counter Strike Process that is running (its going to be the one taking up the most memory if you sort it by "Mem Usage"
e) scroll down to set Afinity
f) *Uncheck* one of the processor cores (should show both CPU0 and CPU1 checked by default)

After i did this, my FPS was over 75...its fluxuates so fast but i knowe i saw it hit over 200FPS when staring at wall with no tearing....

Thanks for everyone's Help...now to buy a new monitor....

Actually kiddo the refresh rate is 75 Hz. The guy who said 75 MHz is using the wrong units.

75 Hz is 75 frames per second. They are directly linked.

Yeah. That's the point. Curious you missed it.

75 Hz (monitor refresh rate) and 75 fps (video card rendering speed) are not directly linked unless vertical sync is enabled or, in this case, temporal antialiasing is enabled. When vsync is off, your card is not at all interested in limiting the number of frames it renders each second. The monitor will still display ~75 frames per second (including partial frames), but the video card is just rendering away (assuming it is not limited by the engine itself) as fast as it can.

You could say that frame rate and refresh rate are really the same beast, as both could be referred to as refreshing some number of cycles per second (Hz), but you'd just end up with mass confusion.
