im using fraps my computer specs in sig

getting avg 36FPS but it drops to 12 sometimes LOL its pretty sad, think its just my nvidia card? (i got this card cheap so i had to take it)

forgot to add, halo is setup as 800x600, no vsync, everything on high cept shadows

1.) Everyone knows Halo does not run well on PC. There has been many theories on why. One popular one is bad port job.

2.) If you're using the first rig in your sig, then you should already know your main problem.

3.) If you're using the second rig in your sig, it's probably your FX5600 plus reason #1 compounded.

here's a copy of something I posted in a thread next to yours, mabe it will also help:

First, AA and AF really don't work. AF works somewhat, but it's just better to leave it off. There is a way to get AA working by disablingAlphaRenderTargets, but it causes several effects in the game to break.

Run it at 1024*768 if you have something around 9800pro speed and fast CPU. But if your really need to, play at 800*600, that's what I had to do for 9700pro system.

Then set everything to high of course (even shadows). Leave it at P2.0, I hear that when switching to other shaders, some textures then need more passes, while in 2.0 they only need one pass. 2.0 also has more reflection effects on certain surfaces and such. So really there is not need to change it, it all evens out I think.

Also, this might not sound great at first, but it really helps smooth out the game. Turn the 30fps limit on. This makes it more consistent, better than seeing fps jump to 60+ then back to 30fps here and there. Just try it. Also, the animations were made to run at 30fps originally on the Xbox, so if you don't have the 30fps limit on the animations can get wierd on the pc.

So,
1024*768
High settings and shadows
30fps limit
No AA or AF

and enjoy the game!

Well, I really can't tell you the fps because I played it locked at 30fps :) But it never really got slow but in only a couple spots in the game were it might have dropped under 20.

Just really, play it like that, 30fps locked. This game doesn't run well on any system and fps can vary widely from inside areas to outside, with inside being slower, so it's best to keep it a consistent fps, like 30. There's no point in trying to get more, it plays fine at that speed. So enjoy the game instead of worrying about what fps your getting, it's not important in this game.

Also, hit F12, I think that turns on the ingame fps instead of the need for fraps.

I'll try Halo out anyway again at 800*600 on my 9600 radeon laptop to see what I get there.

My desktop:
Barton 2500+ (185*11.5) 2127mhz
Asus A7N8X Rev 2.0 1005bios
2x512mb Geil DDR3200 6-3-3-2 Dual
Thermalright slk-800-u heatsink
Antec True 430watt
Radeon 9700pro -- not OCed
Compro Videomate TV/FM Gold Plus
Maxtor IDE pci card, Audigy 1
HDs WD, 3x80gig, 60gig, 30gig
AHANIX NOBLESSE case

Laptop:
Athlon 64bit 3000+
512ram 2700
60gig 4200rpm drive
128bit 9600 64mb

the computer in my sig is getting about 34 FPS. Mine too dips down to about 15 when I throw a grenade or something. It is my POS video card.

What are your settings at?

I'd imagine your GF2 card would run the game a lot differently, plus look different since it doesn't use DX8, so a lot of the effects that make the game look good and what makes it really slow are not present. You probably can't wait for that 9800 card, but in this game, it will still run slow, just look a lot better and higher lowerend fps, the high fps won't go soaring.

I just wanna say how sick your overclock in your main sig is. I'm guessing you raised the fsb by 3? Maybe 4?

Back on topic:
Halo plays fine on old machines just don't expect to play with AA/AF on high res and all those crazy shaders. You know the deal, if your happy, stay happy. If your not, lower options until you become happy, or cry yourself into getting a new graphics card ;).

i run halo at 30+ FPS at least all the time when i play at 1280x1024 not sure what the FPS is exactly but it probably runs at about 45FPS. of course with high details and ps2.0 and i was amazed to see it run so well.

ASUS A7V600
ATHLON XP 2500
512MB CORSAIR PC2700
POWERCOLOR ATI RADEON 9700PRO

Even at 1152*864 the game comes to a crawl in some indoor scenes, like the opening of the game where you first fight in that lunchroom area with tables.

I can't imagine playing at 1280 even on a 9800XT. MP plays a little smoother, is that all you play, because SP I don't think would yield 30+ fps with a 9700pro at that res, you'll be down into the single digits almost in certain fights.

i play at 800 x 600 with no aa or af and i almost always keep above 60 and usually get aroud 140

I run at 1024x768 with all in game features on/high (ie: shadows, specular..etc on). Get about 50 fps constant.. never really drops below that.. even in big fights..lowest ive ever seen was about 35.

Specs:
Asus A7N8X-X
Athlon xp 2000+ @ 2.1ghz
BBA 9800 pro

Hello,

Using some tweaks I get a solid 100+ with all details maxed in 1024X768 theres a good tweak guide if you go over to www.gearboxsoftware.com . Look in the Technical forum there is a sticky with the link over there.

Your A64 and 9800XT probably helps a tad. :)
