FPS Aiming Delusions

Over the years of playing FPS games online there's the collection of games where I hit where I aim and those where I shoot and pray.

Doom, Doom2, Doom3, Quake, Quake2, Quake3, Enemy Territory and Far Cry, I shoot at something and hit it, it takes damage and it dies.

Unreal, Unreal Tournament, C&C Renegade, CS: Source, HL2DM, I shoot at it, it gives the blood spatter that I am hitting it but it's like I am shooting blanks.

So, what's the reason I play the first grouping of games reasonably well but feel like I am playing through some disconnected dream in the second list?

Because the first group of games have no recoil effects or any type of accuracy penalty for spray-and-pray. Point and shoot, hit all the time.
The blood splatter you see in the second group is a result of some of the bullets making contact.. Usually the first couple, and maybe a couple more randoms.

Unreal and Unreal Torunament have no recoil effects that i know of. Also, I've played Urban Terror Mod for the Quake3 engine which does have recoil and movement penalties and I was able to hit things fine.

Is it something with the game play and game physics? Like know how some people play worse after a patch with alot of changes to the game physics. Or am I just partial to id Software engines? (not counting far cry)

No recoil in ET, Farcry? Theres tons of it. Oh and Q2 did have recoil with the machine gun.

yes this is true, just watch how the reticle spreads when you open up with one of the guns, accuracy turns to crap.

Yeah, there is a lot of recoil in Far Cry. The only recoil weapon in UT2004 is the AVRIL.

Or the fragops mod for UT2k4! OMG talk about recoil! =o

I hate how most dev's do recoil the easy way, I mean holding a gun perfectly straight and having the bullets go in nutty directions isnt the correct way to do it. (urban terror is perfect example of bad recoil)

The gun should move with the recoil, shoot the gun moves screen up (well not striaght up), like navy seals does. (these are all q3 mods btw)

/me is tired of the shooting circle method

its the same as watching CS players burst shoot while aiming entirely at the feet yet make a headshot.. how fuckin lame!! If the recoil is there, then the weapon movement should be there, aka the barrel tip moves accordingly...

Recoil + ("per-polygon hit" OR "small hitboxes") = crap aim

First time i experienced it used to the extreme was in FarCry, that's the first game i had to use bursting 100% of the time in single player o_0 The headshots certainly aren't as easy as previous games. When Doom3 was being tested, the testers couldn't hit each other for the same reason so they kinda had to 'tweak' the hit detection a bit :D

I think the games Riftgarde listed are the ones where you don't 'feel' the bullets hitting the other guy. You can kill easier with the first group he listed than the second one. Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 are in the same league, but it's harder to make a definite kill in UT with the equivalent weapons, or rather, it's easier to stay alive.
