FPD2485W "Inverted" Ghosting SURVEY

Who do you work for Drant? You XXX out all your posts in that Gateway thread then do nothing but make slams on this display. Even going so far as making a lame music video on Youtube based on this display.


My display has minimal "inverted ghosting" and no traditional ghosting. This display excels in so many aspects that a little smearing is not going to ruin it for many people. Sell it and get a new display dude, give it a rest.

There is no reason this couldn't have gone in the Gateway thread btw.

Any who, that is pretty bad ghosting. Call me naive but I like posts like this, he wants to make an impact with this point, maybe he goes a little over board with it, but I don't think he has any evil corporate intent. I am sure it will help people in their purchasing decision, I don't think he took the time to make a 5 minute music video showing ghosting on a monitor for any malicious reasons. I think it's just kinda a little paranoid to think that. I think he's just trying to help, but maybe coming on to strong for some people.

You probably have a bigger history on this guy then me, cause all I read was this one post by him, but it seems like it would help people to me. Pointing out mistakes of manufacturers is what this forum is great at :)

Hell I've been accused of working for Gateway since I like this display so much. It has great scaling features, amazing picture and the colors boom off the screen. The constant barrage of slams because of some minor ghosting is just kind of annoying, and quite frankly the display ghosts less then most displays I use at work (Dell 2407 included). Especially considering all the major functionality problems the other 24" displays have, no scaling feature, black outs, having to send out a monitor to get a firmware that only partially works ...etc etc

Like I said, it's just odd that he edited all of his posts in the Gateway thread to be XXX's and then just spends all of his time trying to highlight a trait of the display that is really only seen when you stare for it.

Clearly it bothers some more than others *(I honestly hardly have the issue), but for this guy to spend all this time, you would think the smarter thing would be to move on to another display.

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I don't consider the ghosting that he posted in that video to be "minor". I can definitely understand that others won't be bothered by it, and I respect others' opinions, but for me personally, I find that type of ghosting to be incredibly blatant and annoying, and it's simply unacceptable for some of the applications for which I would use the monitor. I also saw one in Best Buy, and that type of ghosting was apparent just by moving windows around on the desktop. It was quite honestly one of the worst-looking displays in the store in terms of ghosting. My Dell 1905fp has a much slower response time than the Gateway, but I still find the ghosting less distracting because it doesn't trail different colors.

So the real question to me is whether the video he posted and the monitor I saw in the store are representative of the ghosting that occurs on the majority of the Gateways -- I only saw one live and the one video, so obviously my sampling of this monitor has been rather limited. You say above that you hardly have this issue -- can you clarify what you mean by this? Is the color trailing not as bad as on the video above? Or are you just not bothered by it (or both)? Also, when you say the "display ghosts less than most", are you talking just about the time that the trails last, or also about the color? I'm encouraged by the fact that a lot of people love this monitor, and I'd still like to consider it, but in all honestly it's pretty hard for me to justify purchasing it when the only one that I had the opportunity to see in person looked like shit.
 
Nice, maybe we can get a good track here when Gateway starts shipping them without the inverted ghosting.
 
That looks like the standard overdrive trailing I've seen on other monitors, except stronger on dark colors. Some monitors don't correctly compensate for overdrive when changing settings, so maybe some settings have stronger trailing than others.

That's my thoughts on it as well. Some monitors can control it better then others but using that gray backdrop (I believe) can be seen on most (if not all) LCD monitors. If this is true then you are splitting hairs. Now if this happened regardless of the backdrop then yes, this is a major problem. Have you tried increasing your refresh rate to 70Hz? Some monitors have a high enough vertical/horizontal refresh rate were you can get away with it (check your manual). Then properly calibrate your brightness (backlit) and contrast and see how it looks then.

I am not saying this will solve the problem however, making sure that your monitor is properly calibrated and a slight bump in refresh rate can go a long way.
 
The ghosting looks horrible. Why does youtube reduce the bitrate of the videos until they are so blocky, it is almost impossible to see any details?

It is more plausible that you are the one working for Gateway than I am an employee of

disappointed in the monitor, ignoring all its positive facets, and starting a coalition against
Gateway is because I have had four FPD2275W, which had intolerable backlight bleeding
on every model. The 22'' cost me $420 but this 24'', which I thought would be the end of
all my troubles, brought along even more with its banding, ghosting, and uneven lighting
at 90* view. These problems were not present on the 22'' and I'm just pissed off that I
paid $200 more for just the 2 extra inches. I went through two of these 24'' at Circuit City
and got more duds. Like you said, to keep trying, and as I did I went through the
Gateway's cross exchange and got yet another one with the exact same problems.
Of course, by the time I got the monitor through FedEx, the CC receipt has already
expired. I really tried to get used to the ghosting and I thought I could, but it's been a
more than a month.

To rephrase my point, I'm pissed off at this monitor because of the IG that was not
present on the 22'' but is now on the +$200 model, and I'm stuck with it. If there were no
IG or if I don't play games at all, then I would shower it with praises as you do, Ferris.

What I'm simply asking here is if this single most annoying problem with the 24'', the
inverted ghosting, is present on every FPD2485W in existence. Meaning there is
absolutely no chance I will get a model that won't do what the video shown. If everyone
says yes, then I will come into closure and be complacent with that fault. If however,
there is a godsent model like Ferris', I will keep trying to get it. By the way, I really would
like to ask you to show everyone how minute your ghosting is.

To the people with inverted ghosting: please call Gateway (on your monitor's box)
and tell them about it. I believe they make a list of the reported problems, so if more of
us tell them about it, they can stop classifying it as an isolated incident.

I went through 4 of them. Inverted ghosting on all of them.

I just don't see it as much when I play Titan Quest or use my PS3 or Xbox 360.

I do use the color file up loaded here and have my contrast and brightness both set to 60 on the monitor, while with my Nividia control panel I set the contrast to 48 and the brightness to 57 with like 1% of gamma. Don't know if it's me but these settings seem to cut down the inverted ghosting for me.

However, IMHO I don't think you are going to get one w/o this problem.
Probably going to have to accpet that fact and move so that you don't drive yourself crazy.
 
Seriously, why not just do a warranty call from Gateway again, get a new display, and sell it. Be done with it if it's something you notice that much. I'm not going through posting videos of a mouse cursor as I don't have the means or the time, but seriously unless I stare for it on mine it isn't bad at all.
 
I have what you describe as "inverse ghosting" but I can deal. After installing that some Color profile that was in the main thread the colors look nicer but mine still has a real noticiable color shift when looking at an angle. Its cool though I got mine the first day it was available at Best Buy, back how long ago (I posted a few pics) and also picked up the 3 year warrenty which I believe will come in handy in about 2 yeards. ;)
 
My monitor has the banding as well. Also, it radiates some serious heat.
Interestingly, the banding (reverse ghosting) didn't appear until I used the monitor for about a week.

I've been able to reduce the appearance of the ghosting 60-70% by adjusting the contrast/brightness so it's not that huge of an issue.

The heat, on the other hand, is ridiculous. It feels like I'm sitting in front of a weird space heater/LCD monitor hybrid.

I get the ghosting, HORRIBLY. I am nearly finished reading through the 96 page monster, hoping a fix was found. All of the posts by the people who "don't get the ghosting" telling us to stfu about it is high uncalled for. It IS happening, jesus. The first thing that clued me into it was playing WoW, anytime I jump the ground textures go through an amazingly tripped out dance of ghosted glory, it looks horrible. Then I started looking for it elsewhere and guess what, it's all over. CS, Supreme commander, WindowsXP and Vista.

The problem is related to heat. It's very apparent if you just turn it off and let it cool down. Then right when you turn it on check for the ghosting. It's video card independent. I will be posting a lengthy post in the giant thread tomorrow, but I need to sleep right now.
 
Has anyone tried the cooling method that I mentioned before? Just find a way to allow a window fan or desk fan to cool the rear of your monitor to see if the ghosting is reduced.
 
Nice test Drant. I tried it out myself on my screen (not a Gateway) and it didn't have trails. :D Thought I'd still contribute to the thread to get things going a bit.

I used a Logitech G5 mouse with the cursor you presented set on 800ppt.
My refresh rate is 60hz (59.9 actually)
Since I recently had a reinstall, all settings are at default.
I adjusted my backlight up and down to see if I could produce some ghosting, but no bad luck. It didn't seem to have any effect at all.
Tried it on [H] grey background as in video and in similar grey background in full screen + total black background in full screen.

Considering there's an un-patched vulnerability with the way Windows handles .ANI files I think I'll be staying FAR away from anything you ask me to install.

Btw, I have the FPD2485WH (NOV 06 build) and the Inverted ghosting is very minor in games like BF2142, Oblivion, and STALKER. Its no worse than any other 24" LCD I tried out before making my decision.

Gateway sent out a replacement monitor. (only took 2 days) The build date on the new one is feb 07 (old one was nov 06) .

It doesn't get as hot as my old monitor and I'm not seeing any banding at all. Maybe the issues were addressed in newer builds? *shrug*
