I had a system failure not so long back and thought my 2x160Gb drives were stuffed. I plugged them into my new system and hey presto they are working. I have changed from a RAID 0 to a RAID 1 setup this time, having learned my lesson.

When installing them, I had a few problems and had to format both with the crtl-s RAID utility on boot. The first one took an hour and a half. I then set the second one off, went out for 20 minutes and came back to find it done. I used the same 'low level format' for each. Does anyone think that this extra time to format could indicate a fault on the disk? It was a power surge that did for me originally, so I suppose one disk could have been damaged, leaving it harder to format, and the other left ok. Any ideas?
 
What brand of drives? use the drive manfactures utility to test both of the drives
 
Seagate Barracudas 7200rpm

I hadn't realised the manufacturers had these utilities, since this is my first problem disk drive. I'll check it out, thanks
