How exactly do you format an XP home HD? When i go to the command prompt, to C:/>, and type format C:, it wont let me because it says "volume is in use by another process" "would you like to force a dismount?" Telling it yes OR no will not let me continue. I dont have the XP disc, just the Dell HP reinstall disc.

Are you trying to reformat the "C" drive? Or format a new additional drive?

no partitioning or new drives, just formatting the whole old HD.

he's using the dell reinstall cd to boot from, and i think we're getting there now. :)

Well, from the Dell disk you do "setup" which will lead you to the partition/format section. You will lose whatever data you had on the drive but if your doing a fresh install you probably backed up....?

If your adding a drive after install you can do everything from inside windows.
