Forcing resolution change?

I just received an IBM Thinkpad R51 as a gift with a 15" LCD but for it can only do 1024x768 resolution which I think is completely stupid, why would they even put a screen this size on a laptop that can only do 1024x768? Anyways...is there anyway to force a larger resolution such as 1280x1024 or is this completely dependent on the hardware?

If you set a higher resolution than native it will probably just pan a view of the larger virtual screen.

LCDs run at a maximum of the native resolution. There might be a utility to run a higher resolution (some are available for PDAs) but it will look crummy.
