So, I have a 17" gateway flat panel monitor. It seems to not be able to go past 1200x1024, and I want 1600x1200. Is it possible to somehow force my monitor to go at higher res? I tried using reforce, and it says its out of range. Any suggestions?

Most LCD's will not go higher than the recommended resolution. So if yours won't then it just won't.

No, - you want to run your LCD @ a native res, you should of looked into it's specs before buying.

Forcing an LCD to run higher res will usually work, but you have to move your mouse to the left / right / top / bottom to scroll the screen.

okay. So I have a crt 17" hp mx75 monitor, and I was wondering if I could "force" this to 1600x1200. I am very new to this. It says native/max res is 1280x1024, does that mean you cannot force it higher? If you can, how should I go about doing it so I don't break my monitor. Thanks

Your LCD has 1280 pixels across by 1024 down. There's one way to get it to go higher.

:)

In other words... You can't split pixels to make more. :)

CRT monitors have max resolutions just like lcd's. It is always optimal to run an lcd at its native resolution.

when is powerstrip and reforce used then...

Power strip is used to set non-standard resolutions usually. Or output resolutions that aren't supported by the video card's drivers.

Forcing resolutions higher than the native resolution will usually just result in nothing showing up on the monitor.

To get 16x12 you have to jump to a 20" or better monitor.

They are called maximum resolutions for a reason.

And Powerstrip/reforce/etc are used to force non-standard resolutions (as mentioned), or refresh rates/resolutions that the monitor DOES support, but Windows doesn't recognize (although unchecking "hide modes this monitor doesn't support" oftentimes works just as well).
