Forcing CCC to use .NET Framework 2.0

I have both .NET Framework 1.1 and 2.0 installed on my computer. I need 1.1 for Visual Studio 2003, and I want to run the CCC on 2.0, but for some strange reason, the CCC will only target 1.1. Is there a way to force the CCC to use 2.0? Since VS.NET 2003 will not work with 2.0, uninstalling 1.1 is not an option.

LOL

No, there is no way to "force" CCC to use .NET 2.0 unless ATI rewrites and recompiles CCC for .NET 2.0.

The .NET framework is a library. You can have multiple programs using it. That's the whole point. :p

If I uninstall 1.1, it will work with 2.0 with no issues. When given a choice between 1.1 and 2.0, however, it chooses to target 1.1, even though there is a newer version available. Based on what I have read, the newer versions of the CCC are supposed to default to 2.0. I am wondering if there is a way to correct this.

Oh. My laptop drivers are pretty old and my newer X800 XL system doesn't have .NET 2.0 installed yet. I didn't know ATI made a change to use either 1.1 or 2.0. Have a link to where you read that it's "supposed to default to 2.0"?

You'll probably have to ask ATI (lol... i've never received any responses from their technical support, so good luck) if it's possible to force using .NET 2.0. It would probably make no difference at all in functionality and I still don't understand why you would want to control that.

I was under the impression that two versions of .NET couldn't co-exist. .NET 2.0 simply upgrades 1.1 and it's backwards compatible.

Maybe I'm way off, but are you sure you actually have 2.0 installed?

I'm almost certain 2.0 does not replace 1.1

That is correct. .NET 2.0 and .NET 1.1 coexist (portions of .NET 2.0 are not backwards compatible with .NET 1.1). CCC can use both versions of .NET, but it will try to use .NET 1.1 by default. I also do not know of any way to "force" CCC to use .NET 2.0, sorry. :(

after a little reading I see that they do in fact co-exist with one another...weird...perhaps the order in which you installed the CCC and .NET has something to do with it?

other than that, unless there is some explicit way to tell an app which version to use, it sounds like ATi screwed the pooch on this one...a .NET 2.0 app seems like it should check for the existence of 2.0, not for the non-existence of 1.1...

They can and do co-exist. I have all three installed and operating: 1.1, 2.0, and 3. .NET 3 is fairly new though and only came out of beta about a month ago I think.

Why does it really matter to you which version of the .NET runtimes the CCC uses?

I read that here.

As for my reasons of wanting to use .NET 2.0, I have read that the CCC runs better with it, and 2.0 is the version that ATI recommends. In fact, I get a warning during the CATALYST install if 2.0 is not installed.

pxc: I can't force ALL my .NET apps to use 2.0 because VS.NET 2003 requires 1.1. It will not work with 2.0.

BBA: I can't uninstall 1.1 for reasons stated above.

Then you will just have to live with only running semi-recent CCC versions on .NET 1.1 just like everyone else who has VS2003 and .NET 1.1 and 2.0 installed. :p Edit: VS2003 actually does work with the registry patch, but you will probably run into problems with something or other.

My Mobility drivers are so old they don't even try to use .NET 2.0. I would just be driven crazy if CCC wasn't running with .NET 2.0.

You may be able to modify the application config file to force .NET 2.0. I don't really care enough to research or test it on my other non-development desktop. See: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/d5cd9b2c(VS.80).aspx

Well, I tried that, and it didn't work. I guess it's time to let it go now. :p

Still, you've been a big help. Thanks!

.NET 3.0 is just .NET 2.0 with some extra crap bundled with it (MSXML6, WPF, etc).

Install 1.1 and 2.0. I have Visual Studio 2003 as well and it works fine.
