Forceware scaling problem

I have a 7900GTO and I'm running the latest Forceware drivers with Win XP.
I'm looking into shifting to an LCD, so I picked up a Viewsonic VX193WM and a Princeton VL2018W at Costco.

Before the comments begin - this are by no means the monitors I plan to stay with. They were available in store and I had never used a wide screen LCD before, so I figured I 'd try them out.

One of the reasons I went with nvidia was because of the scaling option in the control panel.
I noticed that FEAR doesnt support higher then 1280, so (although the picture was bad) I thought I'd change the scaling to accurately run the lower rez.

I was unable to apply the do not scale setting. I would get a banded screen (with no desktop icons) and after about 30 seconds it would return to the settings screen, with the default setting selected.

I thought it might be the monitor, so I tried the 20" Princeton. This time the LCD scaling page wasn't even displayed as an option, nada, no where to be found.

After using the two displays, I like the 20" WS best, but I am concerned that if I buy a high end Samsung or Viewsonic, that I won't be able change the scaling if I need to.

Anyone have any ideas?
