So i'm guessing my 8800GT is about to croak... last few days noticed it's gotten extremely loud and checking rivatuner, idles at 90, under load 110.

My question is what card is the best option for me right now.

I don't play games that often, since anything cross-platform i'll grab for x-box or ps3.. but when I do i like the graphics maxxed.

I run semi dual display, I say semi because primary and gaming it's a single 1680x1050, but 90% of the time I have Media center running and open on the big screen over HDMI.

Originally I was looking at the 5850, but since prices went up on them since the gtx480 release (seen 40-50$ increase from supercom, ASI and techdata) and I can't wait for it to come back down starting to look at the 5770

Some of the things i've been reading say the 5850 would be major overkill, the rest of my system is older, intel E8200, 8GB ram so bottlenecks is also a consideration.

What PSU do you have?
What's your max budget for this upgrade?

Right now I'm using Antec Earthwatts 550.. budget wise 250-350, damn summer vacation planning eatting the funds (hurt when I had to cancel the 5x1TB upgrade :/)

For 1680x1050, yes the HD 5850 would be a tad overkill. But the HD 5830 is priced a tad too high for me to recommend it. So I'd recommend the HD 4890 would should be just right for 1680x1050. Though if the performance for 1680x1050 with your 8800GT is just fine, pick up the HD 5770 instead.

Also is your 8800GT is still under warranty? If so, RMA it.

make sure you blow out that 8800gt's heatsink real well also.

5850. Keep your eyes peeled. They go for like 225 sometimes. Just gotta find the right deal.

Either a 5770 or a 5850. The 4890 is a good performer but runs much hotter, uses more power and lacks the features of the newer cards.

I recently put an 5770 with the new cooler in one of my rigs. You can barely tell the damn thing is even there even under load. It's Mr. Cool and Quiet.

so I bought the 5850, hooked it all up, and no display coming from either DVI port.

Put the 8800gt back in and it works fine.

Was wrong about the PS, it's actually a truepower 650 so it should handle it without problem

Motherboard is P5N-D .... any suggestions?

If you really don't want to spend additional money. You can clean it out if you like. Or dismantle the heatsink and clean it out with isopropyl alcohol and reapply the thermal compound. I don't know how the 8800 GT thermal pads are, if they will tear off, forcing you to purchase new thermal pads/tape or you can gently put them back in their original position. If you're going to do the cleaning route, be very careful in removing the heatsink so you don't damage the pads.

take your card out of your case, grab a can of compressed air and go outside, then shoot all the dust out of it. This will most likely fix your heat problem.

already bought the new card... just, it's not working *points to his message up above*

did you try both PCI-E slots? Also, if/when you get the 5850 workin there are ways to allow your 8800gt to become phyx capable even with an ATI main card.

just tried it in the second slot... a tiny bit relieved it didn't work, since the sata ports get covered by it.

Still no go :/

Make sure to clean off all that nvidia driver software first... I think that causes problems sometimes too. Try to install the ATI/CCC software while the nvidia card is in too possibly?

Did you plug in the power connector to the ATI card?

Do you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard?

Have you tried resetting the BIOS?

If none of those work, either you got a bum card or the monitor doesn't like it.... maybe try unplugging the monitor power for a while and then plug it back in and see if you get a picture with the ATI card.

yeah powers connected... hard not to connect it with the loud crazy squeel cards make without it :p

bios is the latest... tried updating it, which is another piss off all on it's own, since anything newer then the bios I was using previously, stopped accepting my 8GB of ram (known problem with p5n-d)

Tried with 2 diffrent monitors, the normal one... and a television using dvi...

Guess it's just that kinda luck for me, will take it into work monday to confirm or not
