Especially for those with widescreen+fullscreen, what do you prefer the widescreens for and whats better on the fullscreen/normal ratios for?

I prefer widescreen for virtually everything. Once you move to it, you don't feel like moving back. Sorta like the experience from moving to a normal TV to a widescreen TV (especially HD).

Widescreen is good for basically everything. It allows the user to see more in games (vs 4:3), it allows for proper viewing of DVD's in widescreen, and the extra desktop space is useful for simple things like webbrowsing or productivity.

I think the only pro of 4:3 ratio monitors is probably vertical space. 20" widescreens have similar heights of 19" monitors (but obviously are significantly wider). However if vertical space is really important (like say working on an import document) most monitors can be rotated 90 degrees allowing a nice full view of say a document or webpage.

In the end it's preference. No amount of blathering about why I think it's so great is going to impress anyone whom has their mindset about which they like to use. I recommend you just go to a friends house whom has a widescreen monitor and fool arround on it. That will get you sold, or make you never want to see one again. Simple as that.

I don't remember the exact dimensions right now, but isn't it more like 20" widescreens have similar heights of 17" monitors, not 19"?

I prefer my widescreen, you can easily have two windows up at the same time next to each other. Also, DVD and games look much better in widscreen format.

I am looking to go from a KDS 15" LCD. What is the best movie and gaming widescreen LCD that is not the Dell 24"?

I have a 2405FPW and i love it. I pretty much leave everything on widescreen. I dont really care about aspect ratios and people looking slightly fatter than their supposed to. As long as they're not HUGE, i stretch everything to widescreen

Love my 23" HP L2335...Widescreen rules...1920x1200 all the way...

Yeah, I don't think theres really anything that isn't better on a widescreen monitor. Someone mentioned on these forums (I believe) that the ancient romans created a "golden ratio" in which they would design landscapes and structures (in this golden ratio) because it was most pleasing to the human eye. The golden ratio was 1.6. So 16:10 16/10=1.6 The ancient romans would prefer widescreen!

I have a 2405FPW on the way, I have a feeling i'll never wanna go back to the "square" world of LCD"s again.

My rig in my room is on the 2005FPW, so i love it. But when I go on the family computer downstairs (HP 17" LCD), it just feels so... square.

20 inch widescreen = Height of 19 Inch CRT, 17 Inch LCD.

This is a good comparison

Cmon people it aint that difficult.
20.0" Widescreen (16:10 Comp) = 17"x10.6"
17.6" Fullscreen (4:3) = 14.1"x10.6"
21.6" Widescreen (16:9 TV) = 18.8"x10.6"

Actually, its more like this for the 2405

That is very, very interesting! And I agree with the Romans. ;)

someone told me that games dont fit widescreen formats... any truth to this?

Native support? No, alot don't. But alot can be modified or haxed or using the LCD itself to stretch it into widescreen view

which would be why the height I used came from a 2005FPW, not a 2405...
A 2405 is my screen + a couple inches wide.

that was the picture that convinced me to shell out the cash for a 2405 instead of a 2005. It's 40% bigger.

the side by side comparisons done before is what convinced me

Unreal Tournament 2004, Doom3, and Half-Life 2 all run widescreen. Almost all games can be configured to 16x10.

I haven't done the calculation but are you sure the Dell 2405FPW is 40% bigger than the Dell 2005FPW?

30% by pixels (1920x1200)/(1680x1050)
45% by inches^2 (20.5*12.75)/(17x10.6)

5.4% less dpi (93.65 vs 98.82)

Id gain 4.5"x.75" or (~70 square inches) by moving from my 2000FP to the 2405FPW

man i would get a 2405, but then i need a better card to run it, since native is higher. do you people with 2405 not play games or just have expensive graphic cards.

I've got the 2405 and I am a gamer...not hardcore, but I really enjoy any fps I can get my hands on...I have a 6800GT, which can be had for under $300 now if you look. I'm not much of a stickler like those "GAMING MUST BE IN NATIVE RES" people, so I usually load up BF2, CS:S, SoFII, etc. and keep it at 1600x1200. It really doesn't affect gameplay or anything at all for me personally...

ok so 1600x1200 isnt blurry on the 2405, i guess i could deal with that. thats only thing holding me back. guess it wouldnt matter cause i already have a 19inch lcd i can game on and use the 2405 strictly for movies/and non gaming related.

Its 20% more pixels. So get a GTX instead of a GT and forget it. If you are buying a $900 monitor, you should be able to scrape an extra $50-100 for the card.
edit: 20% more compared to 1600x1200.

Dont know about "should".... some of us who buy a $900 monitor have to shave off $50 to 100 off the card.

LOL...

yea, $900 monitor, plus another $300-500, aint exactly cheap. i paid $900 for my 19inch planar lcd 4 yrs ago.
i mean i could afford it, just it isnt worth it just yet, since the new gtx are new and soon to be outdated...

So are there only 2 or 3 widescreen monitors out there? Under the massive Dell 24"?

AFAIK, yeah... :( that's too bad because I can tell a lot of people would like a 15"-17" 1280x800 widescreen LCD, which would bring widescreen monitors down to reasonable prices. Oh well, there's always next year...

I have my wide screen 23 inch apple screen and love it. CSS rocks at 1920x1200. My notebook has a standard 14.1 inch screen. From using a widescreen notebooks before I must say I perfer the standard 14.1 inch screen better. Mine is 1400x1050. I love that res on it. The wide screen 15 inch notebooks are bigger then I wanted and I like this one as the smaller notebooks that are widescreen tend to not have a good graphics adapter in them. Desktop work though the widescreen is a must.
