It have been a long time (pre Q6600) since I've run a AMD chip.

What in the world kinda settings am I looking for on this thing for a sable OC and good ppd.
 
first off what X6 do you have? the 1090T/1075T/1055T? since they overclock different to reach the same goal will make it easier for me to explain it instead explaining both ways. :D
 
i got mine at 3.4Ghz running with a corsair H70,what cooling do you have?

the cpu thermal limit is 62c so you want to stay below that for certain.

what mobo u got, what ram?
 
Its been a while since I did F@H with my 1055T but you should be looking around 11-15k ppd (if I remember correctly from the summer)

NB frequency plays a significant part in getting your TDP down along with the memory frequencies. You should try and definitely get over 2600 at least.

Here is what mine is OC at right now for BOINC projects:

1055T (125 watt version) - 255*14 (3570@1.375V) - I can get my chip up to 3976 (at 1.50V) but I don't like to keep it that high. It is very easy to get around 3.6 or so on stock voltage or a slight voltage bump especially if you have the 95W version. After 3.6-3.7 you start to need to add a lot of voltage to get your OC a lot higher. Additionally I know if you have a higher FSB (and lower multi) at the same speed you will definitely help your TDP. I would go that route first if your trying to maximize ppd and start at a 13-13.5 multi with a FSB around 280+. This way you can also get your NB frequency up as well.

NB - 10x (2.55GHz) with a voltage bump to 1.2
HT - 8x (2.040GHz) stock
8gb DDR1333 @ 1360 (1.5V)

I hope some of this was useful for you. You definitely can get around 4Ghz if you really want to push your chip but your going to be using a lot more power. To me it was not worth the 5-10% increase in points for a 30-45% increase in power.
 
ok so requires a little more work when it comes to overclocking.

easy way of doing this is to drop the hypertransport clock to 5x(1ghz) drop your ram multiplier to DDR3 1066 or what ever the lowest option in. then depending on the overclock and cooling you have the easy way is to set the cpu voltage to 1.4 or 1.45v and then increase the FSB(HT) clock til it becomes unstable. at 1.45v it should be more then enough to do 3.8ghz.

i would start off with 250x14=3.5ghz @ 1.45v stress test that. see how it goes. then try increasing the FSB 15-20 mhz steps. or you could try for 275x14 = 3.78ghz. the 1055T will easily hit 4ghz. your only limitation is the options on your motherboard and temps.

also if your motherboard has an option for the NB multiplier you will want to lower it as you increase the FSB since the the FSB increase also increases your NB clock. max NB clock is 3ghz for the x6's.


once you have reached the overclock you want start increasing the hypertransport clock/multiplier back to 2ghz. you are good up to 2.5ghz'ish. then raise the ram multiplier as close to the reference clocks as possible. it sounds like a lot of work but this is by far the easiest way to doing it compared to troubleshooting each variable you just remove all the variables in the first go around.

PPD wise it will be around 12-16k PPD depending on the overclock you end up with. 4.1ghz is about 16k PPD 3.8ghz is around 14-14.5ish and 3ghz is around 12k PPD depending on the WU. (this is not counting any gpu's running on the system as well)

Does this NB frequency guidance apply to lesser AM3 chips as well? I just finished configuring an Athlon II 630 box for folding @3.4ghz with 2.43ghz on the NB. I should be able to raise the NB with a lowered multiplier, is this worth the effort?
 
My voltages are different from what you are saying....

At default:
CPU:1.475
NB:1.3
PLL:2.5

I can get 3.2 stable by just playing with the FSB, but can't get your settings to work mmmmD

I'm running a 212+
I have dropped the RAM all the way down....

the x4/x2 based chips are only good for 2.6ghz on the NB and thats with a lot of voltage tweaking. most wont go over 2.4ghz. if your board supports changing the NB multiplier then yes it applies. if it doesn't then you are screwed. some have the NB multiplier tied in with the hypertransport multiplier.

ahh shit completely forgot about that.. yeah the turbo feature can't be on. it will cause issues. same with cool 'n quiet.
 
that cpu uses a 16.5x multi for turbo.......... at a 228 fsb that would be 3762 mhz turbo.


it could be that when you are trying to push the cpu further say 250 fsb (250*14=3500 Turbo=4125mhz) that you are over stressing and overvolting the cpu causing it or your motherboard to become unstable............. due to temp or voltage fluctuation..

The reason that I say overvoltage is the fact that turbo core automatically applies voltage to the cpu cores when in turbo mode.
Turbo is only active during certain P states, these are generally triggered in single thread apps booting windows and Bios Posting would be included in this description

That cpu loves it's Vcore..It is my old setup, and it folded nonstop from launch up until I shipped it out;)...Isaac, I left all the settings preconfigured, all you had to do was drop in 1600 CAS 8 ram and you were off and running..Did you reset the CMOS or something?:confused: ...

If you need help, I will be glad to walk you through some stuff with it on IRC...That CPU will easily do over 2.9Ghz on the NB as well, but again, it loves it's voltage..The early X6's seemed to love a little more voltage then the later ones...That board is good thru 293mhz HTT easy..I never had a need to push it further...

 
Some of the SATA device settings didn't like the new SATA III HDD and Blue Ray drives. So I reset everything.

If I can't get it back to 4 or close that's ok, this is a min rig first and folding second.

Got it up to 3.7.

Looks like it doesn't like a HT speed above 2000mhz.

You should be able to get the HT above 2000 bump the NB voltage up a little at a time this will enable your HT to go higher, The higher you can get your HT to run the faster the overall system performance, as this is the link between the memory, cpu, and IO

your hypertransport has no effect on your memory. it's primary use is the communication between the cpu and chipset. memory is completely contained within the IMC(NB). back in the LGA-775 days your bus speed was far more important because it did effect memory performance due to the external NB.

There is zero difference between HTT @ 2Ghz and 2.5-6Ghz...How do I know? I verified it...Nice clock Kendrak, but unless your ram is limiting you for some reason, I could do 3950Mhz @ 1.5V on her...As I stated earlier, the early X6's had a higher VID then some of the new runs...You should be able to get to 4Ghz or damn close with that Vcore...

Your temps are looking very nice, especially since that basement is so warm and cozy;)...Set your NB VID to 1.4V and you should be able to get 3Ghz or very close(depending on divider)...And again, leave the HTT set to 2Ghz...

Also wanted to mention that GB 890 board likes it's cpu PLL voltage too...I thought it was just me until I saw the [h] review stated that they used a pretty decent PLL voltage boost...
 
Well the system is running stable at 3.7 and I'm currently getting 13+K ppd with a p6023.

Not to bad :)
 
:)Not too bad at all. I'm gonna jump on the X6 bandwagon. Gotta 1090 comin' tomorrow along with an ASUS M4A87TD Evo mobo and 8GB 1600 DDR3. Hints appreciated :)
