Well I'm a bit new to distribuited computing so I figured I'd put my systems to work for ole team 33.

System 1: 80GB PS3 (Rare MGS4 unit with PS2 hardware decoder)
System 2: MEGA LAPPY (running GPU and CPU instances)
Specs = Intel i7 3.06, 6GB DDR3, GTX 280, 3 HDDs (250 + 2X 500GB)
System 3: Media Server (running GPU and CPU instances)
Specs = Core 2 Quad Q6600 (stock), 4GB DDR2, dual 3870s, 2 HDDs (74GB Raptor, and 1 300GB)
I seem to be doing a good job to my knowledge, is there anything I should do to increase productivity without burning up my boxen?

I should read the FAqs, but what is "big adv" that's all I keep seeing around here
Also will it cook my i7? just curious.

Nah run prime 95 on all your cores and see what the temperature goes to. Bigadv is one giant work unit that after a number of completed work units gets you a bonus plus the points the workunit is worth. It will also require all 8 cores and minimum 4.6gb of ram.
 
Since your i7 is in a laptop, I wouldn't go -bigadv if I were you. However, you can still use the Windows SMP client with newer A3 core units. This applies to both your i7 and your Q6600 machine.

To set up the SMP client, first go here and get a passkey: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py

You'll need to use the same passkey on all your machines in order to qualify for the early completion bonus which grants you extra points for submitting work units before the deadline. This bonus system is a major aspect of the points system with the newer A3 units. Once you have your passkey, follow this guide to set up the SMP client: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1032943603&postcount=2

Since the guide is old, it's missing a few things, but the general installation instructions are still valid. However, make sure you put in your passkey when prompted (the guide predates the passkey system so it doesn't mention that), and make sure to enable the -advmethods option as well, since it is required to run A3 units. Once that's done, you should be all set.
 
Well there's 3 factors here which are going to permit me from going to any bigadv units.

FIrst, the price of DDR3 laptop RAM. I got 6 now, and to buy 3 sticks of 4GB a piece is gonna kill my pocketbook. Gonna wait on them prices to drop, maybe if I'm lucky enough, score a 5000 series xeon and drop it in here.

Second, it's still a laptop. While it's running in a cool / deep basement in chicago with adequare ventilation, it's probably not a great idea without increased cooling. Mind you the GTX280 makes this thing hot enough doing it's biz.

Third, I use the laptop to surf, DJ, watch movies, etc. Considering the current folding it does not really hamper these activities, it's probably best I don't push it any further to make it unusable for day-to-day work.

If anything I'll check into that on the Q6600 considering that unit runs in a cold, and dark corner of the house and has more than enough air flow to keep cool.

Oh ya didn't notice the laptop part... but it's at 3ghz???

You can also run big adv with 6gb, I am currently w/o a problem

It's a custom built Clevo D900F series laptop.
I bought it as a portable desktop replacement and will soon have something a little more portable. (Laptop 12lbs + power brick 2lbs = HEAVY)
I'm waiting for those dual Atom core netbooks with the ION video hardware.
Yes I paid 3G for it back in April 2009 and I have NOT been dissapointed with it's use.
(the screen is a little meh)
Currently there's a 3.06 desktop i7 in it (apparently I can upgrade to a Xeon 5580 according to Eurocom)
Also RAM can be bumped to 24GB of DDR3 but I don't have the dough to buy 8GB sticks of 1066 (Jesus Christ the Price)
The 3 HDDs have come in plenty handy, and LAN party action setup is a breeze.

This is pretty much my setup now. I work in the dark.

You need to run the A3, SMP2 client like Zero said on your systems.

If they get a bit warm you can just tell the client how many threads to use by changing the -smp tag.

A3 SMP will work best for that, as im sure others have stated by now.

Not that I'm trying to recommend shutting *down* a client, but you may want to rethink the Ps3.
They only do about 900 PPD and the amount of juice they suck up and heat they put out...depending on your thoughts may or may not be worth it. I let mine run for awhile, but I just figured the juice was too much for such little PPD.

The way the snow is falling I'll take the extra heat. That would be first on my list durring the summer however.
 
What is the draw on the PS3? I thought it was like 150 or so, I know that's bad but it was all I had for a day there, got me 1300 points

hell, I let it run for a long time when I was active, got almost half a mil off it, just finishd my 1337th WU yesterday since I redid the hdd (360 gig FTW!!)

You can set the PS3 to "Expert Mode" and set it and forget it.
Apparently the pull is somewhere around 110W.
Besides, electric is included in my rent so, RUN BABY RUN.
The PS3 for all I care can run all day, the client was made by sony to run on the system according to Stanford.
Plus temprature wise, Ambient basement temprature, somewhere around 62-64 depending on the snow outside.

*shrugs*
