For Old School: Spoiler for "The Lurking Horror"

This one is for all of the old schoolers out there. Gamespy ran a feature on the 10 Scariest Games, and #10 is Infocom's "The Lurking Horror":

Here's the snippet that got me wondering:

Underwear Destroying Moment: Looking into the pit in the Altar room and finally finding out what happened to all those missing students.

Did anyone that played this game know what happened to all the students? I've played all the Zorks, and Planetfall, but this one I missed. Can anyone tell me what happened? Not too many people will probably mind a spoiler to a game that's almost 20 years old.
