Unless Nvidia changes the numbering system on their cards (ie. 6200, 6600, 6800 and a G70 card being 7800GTX) in three generations from the current crop their model numbers will be the same as ATI's last generation of cards (9200, 9600, 9800)

Interesting...and very true with the exception of the "Geforce" name attached to it. I suppose for the sake of safety they'll want to move off of that convention rather than have anything confused with the old ATI lines.

I definetly wouldn't want to pay $800 for a 9800 card :)

:D LMAO! Oh come on...you would be the pimp on the block. Just make sure it's gold plated first. :D

That's a good point you've brought up. And one for serious speculation and debate. Don't forget the range of Radeon 7000 and 8000 monikers, as well. I'm sure the gurus at nVidia have had this possible marketing disaster unsettling their stomachs for quite some time now. And I'm also kind of confident that they have some kind of new and creative naming scheme all planned up when it's time to lay the GeForce name to grave. I'm not making any set in stone assumptions; just brainstorming some possible situations and scenarios that nVidia may have to face. Then there's the other aspect that a lot of people are extremists when it comes to video card brand comradery. They'll know (and be sure to let everyone else know - ever been to a CompUSA or Best Buy and just quietly stood in the background to observe people talking about video cards?) that a GeForce 7500, 8500, whatever the naming scheme brings will be faster, better, and waaaaay more powerful than any of those "old crappy ATI cards".

I always wondered how long the names Geforce and Radeon were going to stick around anyway. Kinda like pentium and athlon. Cmon people, its time to move on already. Pentium is 15 years old. and pentium 4 has stuck around the longest of them. when do we get pentiumV?

anyone?......anyone?.......Beuller?

Yeah, the pentium 4 monkier in particular has overstayed its welcome. Prescott is quite a bit different from williamette/northwood so it probably should have gotten a new name. I'd assume that intel didn't want to change it since pentium 4 is practically a household name now and dumb consumers will buy anything that says pentium 4 on it lol.

In some ways I would like to see some name changes, but from the manufacturers point of view I can see why they don't like change. As said before Pentium is a household name for anyone who owns a computer, but Radeon and Geforce aren't quite as common. The average consumer doesn't care as much about the graphics card, but more about the CPU.

It's the same in the auto industry. Most manufacturers change the name of their cars every 5 - 10 years (or more), but for their hallmark models the names remain the same. (ie. corvette, mustang)

I think I would like to see Nvidia and ATI change their name and numbering systems. I don't think people will get confused because the Nvidia cards will be a few generations apart from similarily numbered ATI cards, but I think there always comes a time when a name gets old.

Completely new brand names would probably cause more problems with novice users than overlapping numbering schemes. Joe Average doesn't understand the difference between the various models. Why else would they sell such weird combinations as FX 5200's with 256MB (it's got more memory than that 9700, it must be better!).

"GeForce" and "Radeon" are names that people have heard before. A brand new name would take some time to establish. Not everyone is as informed as the typical [H] reader.

it's ok, it won't matter much anyway so long as we have our trusty best buy and compusa associates to help us with our purchasing decisions

I really hope that you are being sarcastic!

LMAO!! It's kinda funny how they all rush up to you and try to sound intelligent. Yeah, not exactly subject matter experts....

sarcasm indeed. it's a little harder to hear the tone of my thoughts on the internet.

best buy associate: "So youre saying you dont know anything about computers? Well, you can get a low sale price on this pIII 1 ghz cpu...between you and me, you can have it for only 500 dollars! If you buy it now, you can get this 100 rpm 6 gb hard drive for only an extra 100 dollars!"

I'll take two!!! :p

Anyone who buys solely on model numbers should taken out back and shot! Either way, I don't see what there is to discuss... it's up to the marketing department to decide. Personally, I don't care what the hell the next generation of graphics cards are going to be called, as long as we can get the same 2x performance increase (or more) just like last time. :)

I think they should change at least the numbering system...

Would Chevy ever make a car named the Mustang?

Or would Ford ever make a car named the Neon?

I don't think so...

"Food for thought" Hey now! no Starcraft cheating now...

an easy fix to that without any confusion would just to drop a 0 or add one.

so it would be the Geforce 960 instead of the Geforce 9600

or they could go back the Geforce 3/4 days and go with a TI or some other prefix to the numders, Geforce 9 TI950 or something...

I would prefer that.

Another thing that gets under my skin now is how many different models we have of card generations at once. Shit, i cant even list them all 6200, 6600, 6600gt, 6800nu, gt, u, u-extreme. there must be nearly a dozen cards this generation offered by nvidia.. ATi is just as bad, x800, x800xl,pro,xt-xt-pe, etc.

Its confusing, and honestly, how much of a price difference is there in the $250 and down section? or even the very top end? then to make things worse, you have the ones with 128mb ram, 265, and now coming up, 512. then we have SLI capable or not on top of that.

seriously, how does one who dosent spend everyday reading for an hour keep up? I mean, i know the difference, but hell if even i can't remember how many different ones there are, how is some one who isn't as well versed as we are to make a decision. (I will grant that this current line up is probably a little worse than normal due to the transition from AGP to PCI-express)

Then once you start talking about well hey is a 6600gt with 265 mb, going to be better, same, or not as good as a 6800 non ultra with 128 on doom3? or how about a 9600xt compared to a 9800se? I understand they want to give us choices so we can get the best card for what we need it for in the long term, but how many of us keep cards for more than a year. i would say maybe a third, probably less.

I say cut the number of models in half, and save the memory upgrades for when you release you next gen cards. There is no reason why there should be 3 different models of the 6800GT this generation. especially with the g70 right around the corner, putting 512 on the 6xxx series of cards is just silly.

Edit. just checked pricewatch and for the x800 generation of cards, there are 33 different models listed. its 'only' 25 for nvidia. fuckin rediculous
