I just made the switch from Winamp to Foobar, and the customization is so overwhelming. Where can I get started to tweak the sound for the best quality?

What soundcard do you have?
Try kernel streaming first: http://www.foobar2000.org/foo_out_ks.zip
then download the flac decoder if it's not already installed: http://www.foobar2000.org/foo_flac.zip

Put these in the components folder in your foobar directory, restart foobar.
Goto preferences goto playback>>output select kernel streaming.
It should just work. I also set the volume control back in the playback menu to -2.00 dB.

You'll need flac files to actually use the flac decoder... start ripping in flac instead of mp3 if you need the quality or you want to preserve your music losslessly.

On a side note. Isn't it about time to start encoding just about everything in flac becuase harddrive space is so cheap. No excuses anymore people lets get going with the flac.

I'm using a onboard nForce2 one right now on a temp shuttle xpc until i get the system in my sig built. so far those changes make foobar sound wayy better than winamp, thanx much!

I doubt with onboard you'll actually experience "wayy better" sound. But if you're paranoid about your sound as I am, then select kernel streaming, and resample to 48000Hz as your onboard probably does this internally. I don't know if your card will support 24bit sound, but you can try it. Oh and definitely strong dither! Isn't foobar2k great? :)
