Ok.. so i finally made it to homedepot... 17$ and 3 hours of work.. and its
put back together and powered up. there are a couple pix of everything bare
after i tore it down

That winter camo-type case looks pretty sweet.

So what's in the tower, CPU-wise? I think I see some Pentium 1's (The black/silver ones) but I'm not sure.

the camo box is an old mod that i did, never quite finished it, and x helped out on it, never had the heart to finish it *shrugs*

in the tower there are mostly 733 p3 370 copper mines, there is one 866 in there though, the top most board (seperated from the rest have a pic of it in the other thread) is the "head" of the server and the only one with a hdd, which is a amd tbird ~1.2

6x p3 370 pin 733mhz Coppermines
1x p3 370 pin 866mhz Coppermine
1x AMD Tbird ~1.2ghz

each with 1x 256mb 133mhz ram

on a single cpu Intel mb

The PPD isnt that high, only ~400 (half of them have 600 pointers right now)..

But.. its not all about the points.. its just another couple CPU's looking for the
weakness in the Dragons Scales to which we can slide the sword in to hurt

Just make sure you have 2 bigass fans pointed at that tower. I tried something similar w/o a fan and was getting CPU overheats. 2 fans in case the first dies...but you probably already knew this.

I would like to set up something like this. Only question I have is how you are getting F@H running on all of the CPUs. Is there a program to allow me to run F@H from one hard drive that is disconnected from the seperate boards (IE running from a network server or something?

Take a look at the very end of this post. It has details about the fold server developed by Unhappy Mage. It's a net boot based folding server that you can just keep adding nodes to and they'll fire up and fold.

 
thanks for teh help. Will have to play with that a bit. Trying to minimize space needed to fold while at the same time maximizing folding power

other then a possible day escape to the beach with a "nurse" :D

Heh yup. still need to clean those up, they will replace the 400mhz chips right above them :)

ppd is not super high, was around 400~ or so... but that is mainly due to the fact that normally 2-5 of the boards got 600 pointers, that take ~200 hours to complete. (remeber they are all like 733mhz...)

parts list..

4x 3' lenght 3-32 rough threaded rods
1x box of 3-32 rough threaded nuts
4x boxes of random rubber washers

could always put nother washer between the top of the mb and the top nut, but
i didn't end up having enough washers, but it has been working fine.
 
Are the PSUs just stacked on one another behind the tower? or did you make some kind of support for them?

They are just stacked up behind the tower, towards the top of the tower i have a bit of tape between them so they don't topple over, but i didn't want to find a way to hard mount them if for any reason one died say in the middle.. bottom.. etc.. so i can just swap it out easier
 
I was thinking about making a similar tower.... albeit smaller... But I was thinking about making a board that the PSUs mounted to, so basically it'd be just like they were on back of a ATX case.... that way there could be some air space between them (if you have multiple fans in your PSU)....

another idea i thought of, it would be a bit more spendy, but build a custom rack (wood)
with a sliding shelf (think file cabinet rails that are used to make the drawer slide in and out)
attached to each shelf, then each shelf has the mb/psu on it, and lots of fans built in around it as well..

for the psu's i was using in this project, they all only have one fan, so there was no issue about blocking the other fan etc.

Right now I have to keep the glass door propped open slightly, and the top is lifted as well
just for airflow (it gets a little warm)
 
I thought about having a shelf that was about an inch taller than a standard ATX MB.... cut grooves in the shelf (top and bottom) and mount the MBs on blocks of wood that would slide in the grooves.... cheaper than file cabinet rails, and the need to move them would be few and far between anyhow....

Or just use a backer board with wood blocks on the top and bottom (for the rails) and then you could mount the PSU to the back of the board that the MB is attached to.... same with a HD (should you need one)

Dang it! You guys are making me want to build my own tower now! Fry's is about 5 minutes away from my work...thinking about buying about 10 of their $70 MB/CPU combos...the thought of 18-20 more GHz for the horde...GAH! No money to spend on computer stuff now. A 15-year mortgage and putting away 15% in savings is not a good way to end up with extra cash.

Don't forget the extra power drawn as well. With oil prices up, electric is goign to start costing more as well. This is the only thing holding me back from building a few cheap folders. I calculated my power usage with a kill-a-watt meter and my Athlon XP 2500+@2400MHz costs me $12 a month in power, not including the extra heat getting dumped that the a/c has to cool. I'm going to start paying more attention to power usage on my next upgrade.
 
I see you're in Houston, too. Stupid Gexa and their $.10/kWhr...I figure folding during the cooler months isn't so bad--the electricity the farm would use (if I had one) would help heat the house.
