I just got a ps3 yesterday. It's been on the last 12 hours or so and I've noticed there is some very hot air blowing out the back. Since it is this hot just sitting there witha movie onpause, what will FAH do to it? Seems like it may get REALLY hot.

I am downloading the FAH client now.
 
Don't have a PS3 but many here do and don't seem to have a problem. I'll let them go into detail.

 
I have 763 WUs currently on my PS3, no heat issues, apparently there are some different fan options based on the model of PS3, but mine runs very quiet unless the ambient temp is above ~80 degrees
 
good to hear about the heat.

I've got it folding right now. WOW I don't know if it's because of the WU it has but it seems to be progressing MUCH faster than my computer.

Do I need to manually stop the client if I want to watch a movie or play a game? Or will it stop automatically?
 
You have to tell it to stop. You can set it up to restart after an idle period though.
 
There are a few reasons why it is faster.

1) The frames are much smaller bits of data compared to the PC
2) The Cell processor is built for floating point

PPD wise the PS3 is not the best solution, you will only see ~900pp, whereas my E6600 core2 @ stock speeds pulls down ~1400ppd. But don't judge the PS3 by it's ppd value, the scientific value of the processing power is a great help,just look at the OS stats page and you will see...

The PS3 makes up for ~12% of total active but makes up ~74% of raw processing power
 
had my ps3 folding for awhile now. The fans have kicked inot high gear and are quite loud. not a problem most of the time.


off topic but while i'm posting. anyone recommend a game that I can rent at blockbuster?
 
I think that Xbox 360 owners have more problems with heat than anyone else. I worry about mine over heating but I also read that adding the fans onto a Xbox 360 will kill your power brick / console. Just a heads up to anyone out there who owns one. =d
 
Ratchet and Clank is more of a buy IMO, I beat it a few times in a row and then play it every once in a while, pick up a used copy.
 
oh believe me, I would recommend for a buy too, but that was the only one off the top of my head :p

 
downloading the demo now. I rented Darkness - not really knowing anything about it. (might be fun if I could control it)

I can say I hate controllers. Anyway to use a keyboard and mouse for games on the ps3?

The controller has no accuracy (at least with me)
 
a few games do support it, but most games don't....you'll just have to look around online and see if the games you want to play will support k/m

 
You can use KB / Mouse in UT3, not sure about any others, a good renter is heavenly sword, it is fun, should take ~6-8 hours.

The Ratchet and Clank demo doesn't really give you the full fun of the game (which is partly because you don't get your full arsenal)
 
I've been folding with my PS3 (40 GB model, upgraded to 160GB) since Xmas morning, and have completed 150+ WUs.
The model I have is very quiet. There is heat coming out the back, but the fans (if they are running) are running at low speed.
My son has one of the older model PS3s. He says that it gets much hotter than mine, and it isn't as quiet.

Which model do you have, robble?

 
While the PS3 will F@H 24/7 without heat problems, it is worth mentioning that this baby draws 192 watts from the wall full tilt. I don't know about you, but this means around an additional $8-$12 a month on my electric bill to run it 24/7.
I plan to kill mine as soon as I get my Q6600 back up, and start folding on it again. Just not enough PPD for the power draw IMO.

Really? That much?

I was considering one just for folding... I might have to re think that.
 
Yeah they suck up the juice, but other than the GPU client there isn't anything that has more floating point power. I keep mine running for the computing power it provides, not the ppd, just have to decide if the trade off is good enough for ya.
 
I have a 40gig model that I bought from BB yesterday. Dunno much about it at all. I bought it mainly for the bluray player (Got a HD Sony 40" LCD yesterday too).

I was hoping google earth would run on it but it doesn't seem to be possible yet.


Still learning about the ps3. I haven't had a console since the Atari days.
