I have several computers that I would like to get folding, but I they do not have hard drives. I have heard of a linux distribution called overclockix and want to give it a try. Anyone know where I can get it and how hard it is to use. I have almost no experience with linux (I have only used redhat on the control unit for an NMR) and want to know if any of you have some good tips for me. Thanks and fold on!

take a look in the FAQ... I'm 99.9% sure there are some links in there for diskless folding... Turmelle has a nice page on how to set it up...

Keep on Folding!!

Thanks, I didn't think about looking in the FAQ. I will try to download it now.

Is there anything special that I need to do in order to download it? I tried and only got a 56 kb file.

Edit: I figured out that I needed BitTorrent to download. Is there a mirror that I can just get the ISO. BitTorrent says that it will need 60 hours to download (probably due to the P2P restrictions on my school's network).

If you need help with the Overclockix ask Arkaine23, (the author i Think) who posts here, there is no better source than the person who built it. :D

Overclockix is a very good diskless option.
I am running my main machine right now on Overclockix due to a Windows corruption...
Overclockix may require a little more memory than a HD based solution but It does work slick.

I may say the hell with Windows and keep running Linux at this point.

:) :)

Well, Klaus Knopper and many others did all the hard stuff. I just changed the installed programs a bit, made it look cool, and gave it a folding service.

I tried Overclockix a few weeks ago, couldn't get it to boot for some reason. I don't remember what happened now but it was most likely hardware related I believe, although the box I was trying it on is pretty standard current hardware. It would get to where it looked almost ready to boot X and then hang. The box runs fine under SuSE and Fedora but couldn't get Overclockix running. Maybe I should try again on another box, but it could be that my Linux *skills* are being overmatched. :p

Then boot in text mode with the code

knoppix 2

What kind of monitor did that happen on, and what video card?

Samsung 955DF and onboard video, I'll have to check later to find out what motherboard and/or video chipset it is (that's the problem with having too many boxes, I can never remember what hardware is in them). Since you asked it kind of jogged my memory, it seems like that may be where it stopped, I don't think there was a driver for the Samsung monitor?!?.....
