Folding with 45nm Quad

Just got a 45nm Quad in today, should have it up a folding in a bit.
I couldn't find a Q9450 so I had to settle for a s775 Xeon 3350
Same specs 2.66Ghz 45nm Quad. Will post ppd numbers soon.

 
Just got up and running, loaded OS , to monitor temps etc.
Unfortunately only have stock cooling ATM, stock is the smaller type like a E6600 HSF
but with copper core. After seeing previous post about size of HSF for Q9450 I was hoping
for something like that, but no. Paid $360 at ebytes.


 
We'll settle for frame times running stock....Looks like that OS has been on there at least 30 min... ;)

 
:(Sorry, having motherboard issues, was betting the bios would be updated
on the P5B Delux. I am using but no, having trouble getting it stable. Trying other
mobo Giga DS3L. Frame time @stock didnt look that impressive.
WU2653 was running around 12:46 in VMWARE 64bit SMP 2 Cores. On 2nd thought thats decent for 2.66Ghz 800Mem
Running stable at @3.0 now crossing fingers.
The E8400 I had oc'ed very nicely on the ASUS P5B D so I was hoping Quad would too,
but the voltage drop with all 4 cores running causing alot problems
on this board.

Update, definitely need updated motherboard :mad:

Seems pretty stable now, the old adage.
"If you want a cpu stable put it under water cooling"
Then up the voltage. That seemed to do the trick. And
I am a bit leery of uping the voltage to much on air.
The vid of the cpu is 1.0875, which is the lowest I have personally come across
so I didn't really feel that comfortable over 1.35v on air.
Right now it seems stable at 1.375v @ 3.51Ghz running some
numbers now thru VM Linux 64Bit SMP Client w/ 2cores

update: WU 2653 @3.50Ghz 9:45 Frame times
 
Wow that is about a minute per frame less than my Q6600 at 3.6Ghz.. very nice... i can't wait for my 9450!!!

 
A bit of a bump in IPC but not too much ahead of the G0. Wish they could to 4 GHz. Then they'd have the IPC and clock advantage.

There's also the new Penryn instruction set, but that will need to await for Stanford's support before we see a performance boost. So far, it's not too shabby. Spending a little more for a 45nm chip instead of a 65nm part will yield benefits in the long run. :cool:
 
I had the box on a kill a watt meter before and after.
The before was with a Q6600 G0 @1.425 3.5Ghz, about 283 watts
After X3350 @1.4v @3.5Ghz about 45 watts less, about 235 watts
There is also a 8800gts in box, causing the high wattage readings

update: obviously I must dump this video card and build new box :p
I don't remember the last time I gamed, all boxes must fold :D

I hear what you are saying. I have an 8800GTX in my main (folding) rig. Seems like a waste of of resources now that I'm folding.

 
45 watts less.. not bad.. not sure if its worth the extra upfront cost though.. guess that would depend on energy pricing where people live. Seeing as I'm only 50 miles from a nuclear power plant, its not bad here.
