folding with 2 different model video cards?

Thought I saw a similar post a while back but I couldn't find it.

I've got a 260 GTX running the folding GPU client in an ASRock P45TT2000 mobo under WinXP . I noticed this mobo has a 2nd PCIe x16 slot. Hmm. Then I looked over at my parts pile and saw a spare 8800 GTS. [/dim lightbulb briefly glows].

1) can you mix different nVidia card?

2) Do you have to "bridge" the two cards (if it is not obvious I have never SLI'ed :D). Any particulars on setup (drivers, configuration etc) would be appeciated.

I think the only "mixing cards" problem could be having 1x nV and 1x ATi, driver issues/conflicting and such, but no...nV+nV or ATi+ATi will use the same drivers and you won't have problems.

In terms of bridging, I think you can bridge SLi/CF identical cards, but to get them to Fold you have to disable SLi/CF in the driver panel (or something like that). Need to check up on that myself, actually, since this x58 will be here Wed. and I plan on putting both 260's on it (with an SLi bridge). :) I'm assuming when you want to start gaming, you re-enable in the driver, play whatever you want, and then when you quit to go Fold again, you disable it again. (or something like that)

There used to be problems mixing nvidia cards that had different numbers of processors but this was fixed several months ago.

The problem with multi-generation nVidia GPUs was fixed apparently, but I haven't tried it myself yet because I adhered to only 8800 cards for my farm. Other people have tried it and stated it works. In regards to bridging the cards, it is not necessary to fold with.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I'll give it a go this evening.

The PSU is 600W, probably won't be able to OC [it won't stop me from trying though]

Way too may people have popped up on my threat list in the past few weeks. Trying to ramp it up before the lawn mowers arrive [404/Dephcon/Mikey976] :D

Aw man, now I don't have an excuse to have the second GTX275 in my i7 box. :(
Guess the GF gets the GTX 275 back and I'll slap that 8800GT in the i7.

:D

600W isn't shabby. Most of my PSUs are in the 550-750W range and all my systems with the exception of one are dual-sockets and loaded with video cards. All processors and video cards are OC'd without exception, and some quite a bit. I think you should have no problem OCing your system if the PSU is of a good grade. :)

I have a 650W PSU and the CPU (E6400) and two video cards (9600GSO and 8800GT) are all overclocked. You'll probably be fine.

600W is plenty for a GTX260 and 8800GTS as long as it's a quality unit. I had an overclocked E2140, GTX260, and two 9600GSOs running off a 520W PSU for a little while. What 600W PSU are you using?

I currently have a GTX260 and 9600GSO folding in my main rig without any problems. The recent 1.31 version of Fahcore_11.exe fixed the compatibility issue that existed previously with using GT200 and G80/92 GPUs in the same system.

Looking at Xilikon's guide, I'm stuck "extending the desktop". The rest of the procedure looks easy enough.

WinXP 32 bit - 195.62 drivers
1st slot 260 GTX hooked to monitor
2nd slot 8800GTS (powered - fan spinning -no dummy plug needed, right??)

I don't see the 2nd card under Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager not does GPU-Z list it. Do not proceed. [bangs head against keyboard]

I looked under COntrol Panel/Display/Setting to look for a box to extend but there is nothing.

I tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and reinstall. No luck.

Any ideas?

First check the card will work in the slot.
Pull your first card out of the box and leave the 8800GST in the slot you want to use it in.
Plug the monitor into it a boot the box.
Will it post ??
Do you get anything on the screen ??
As its not showing up in device manager, I'm guessing its not working.

Luck ......... :D

You were right, not working. The 8800 would work in the primary slot but not in the second slot.

[eye catches something ... what's this?]

A SLI/XFire Switch Card. By deafult it is set for x16 which disabled the 2nd slot in my case, switched it to "CrossFire" mode which enabled both slots @ x 8. Shazam!

Thanks all for your help everyone, she is folding away x 2 GPU at about 12000 PPD. :D

I'll let it run for a day before pushing the clocks higher.

Awesome Crafty! Thanks for the boost in PpD! :D
