Folding While Gaming?

Just got my new box setup with a 3.2HT. I setup two clients, and they are churning away. For you folders/gamers, do you kill your folding process before gaming, or do you just leave it run?

I really don't notice a difference on a 3.0ghz prescott. I don't shut it off. Then again, probably the most intensive game I play is HL2, if I were running BF2, I'd probably do a frames comparison, and see if it was any smoother without.

Trial and error. BF2 has been know to have problems. Works fine so far for me.

I can run both instances on my 3.6 Prescott. One instance uses big packets. I play WoW mostly, and have no issues playing. Shutting down the game however, is a 50/50 shot.

My AMD Opteron averages about 340 Points Per Day (PPD) at the desktop. Playing some other games like UT2004 will get me down to around 220PPD. I leave it running. Even with my old P3 800mhz I did'nt notice a diffrence.

There have been known to be some glitches with the graphical client. Where if you open it up, and close it, some games will kick to the desktop because of it (this happens like every 5 seconds).

I run the console only and have not seen a problem running any games. Just make sure it is set to idle priority (default).

the graphic client and the best game ever, team fortress clasic, works fine for me

I just let it flow, BF2, GTA, just about anything, my A64 3500+. I think what makes the biggest difference is the 2 gig of ram I have, but even before I made that jump, I really wasn't seeing much trouble.

when running something like battlefield 2 when im hard pressed for memory (only have 1 gig) I close the client...

battlefield 2 takes up 1.07 of my 1 gigs of ram (or so task manager says)

if im running the console as a service while loading battlefield 2 it takes a painfully long time... other then that dont notice a huge difference while playing games with console running.. (usually leave it on)

I shut down the client when gaming. I thought I noticed a difference once, so I just do it every time now. It's probably not going to get much done during a game anyway, so I just play it safe. I have forgotten to shut it down once or twice and didn't notice anything, so I'm sure it's OK for at least some games.

I have to shut it down on a machine with a P-4 2.8 Ghz when my daughter wants to plan an older Harry Potter game. Video card is an ATI 9800 Pro.

On another machine, an AMD 3200+ with a NVidia 6600GT, some games play fine with F@H. Others don't.

What client are you running? There are known issues running the graphical client and then running games, or any other program that uses the DX overlay in windows. It's a known problem, which is another one of the reasons why we suggest everyone run the console version where available.

i run the console version (as a service) and leave it running on my A64 3200+ (1 gig of ram) while playing games (i just play CS).

I kill my processes....
Even that pesky svchost service?
:p

I usually don't kill FAH while gaming. That said, I haven't had time to game in about 8 months... :(

I usually shut off both instances of F@h while I play Guild Wars, because if I don't it sucks the memory up really bad. I only have 512mb in my pc, so gaming and folding at the same time, doesn't do me much good, game lags, but the folding goes just fine.

I'm running the graphical version. I'm new to folding, and new to the [H]orde.

Can you start and stop the console version with ease? Or do you never need to? If I need to reboot, the just quit the graphical version, and every time it starts up where it left off. I've read here at the forums that the console does not always do this.

Thanks.

Here is the guide to setting up the console client. Step 13 specifically deals with how often the client will save its files during processing. By default the console saves data every 15 minutes but you can change this time to something lower or higher depending on your needs.

Yes you can start and stop the console as needed. In my case, I've created .bat files that will invoke the service start and stop commands. The code for what I have is as follows:

start.bat:
net start "FAH@C:+Program Files+Folding@Home+FAH502-Console.exe"

stop.bat:
net stop "FAH@C:+Program Files+Folding@Home+FAH502-Console.exe"

Note, these will only work if you have the console installed as a service, and the sections marked in blue will vary depending on where you've installed F@H. You can find the console service name by looking in Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services and look for FAH@C:.... this will be the serivce name.

As an update:

I noticed a big difference in the loading times of the map without the client running, so I just go in and stop the services before I play.

Thanks again for all the great info!

Another idea is to run the console version just as the console and not as a service. I keep it running down in the task bar until I fire up a game and then I close it. When I'm done, the empty task bar reminds me to fire it back up again. I've been doing that for years and it's worked pretty well for me.
