Hi, I've been running UD since 01 on a team that seems abandoned, so I switched to this one.
I just built a new computer using a quad core. Running UD on it seemed a waste(no smp from what I can tell) so I figured I'd try folding on that one. I ran the graphical client for a few days and that seemed ok, so I just set up 4 text clients(I hope). On UD, I usually set it to run only as a screen saver on my gaming computer, and I'm wondering if there is a way to get the text folding clients to behave like that. Or, is their priority so low, I shouldn't really worry about a performance impact from just leaving the 4 of them running?
I was looking at the scheduler set up page, but I'm not sure how that works.

If this turns out to be not feasible, I might just wait til the new shiney UD client comes out and go back to just running that.

I'm sure I speak for everybody here, welcome to [H]orde. I'm a gamer myself and I'm running two console clients on my dual core and it doesn't affects my gaming performance at all. UD, on the other hand might have in your case.

Now this is a required part for you, post your folding porn [picture of the rig]. :) Put that 4core to some good use. Any questions or concerns? Just ask.
 
Thanks. It seems kinda odd having the cpu at 100% all the time now. It used to not break 40% most of the time. I don't notice any kind of slow down either, so I guess I'll just see how it goes.

You really shouldn't notice that its running as long as you have enough ram to handle everything you do. I've got 2gigs at home on my opteron 170 that folds on both cores 24/7 and I never feel a slowdown in anything, even when gaming.

 
The SMP client on a quad core should average about 70%
across the cores. Sounds like you're running 4 individual clients.
and the SMP will give you more PPD :)
 
I know I am a FAH guy myself, another suggestion is run UD on one core, and FAH on the other. Keep up the UD lovin, while givin all the cores a workout.


 
You are right, I'm misusing the lingo. I went and installed 4 console clients. I'm runnin windows xp, I didn't see a dl for a smp client for that OS. They have seemed pretty well behaved so far, so I'll probably just continue that setup. Unless there is a xp smp client that is noticeably more efficient?

I have 2 gig installed also, I haven't seen the memory exceed 84%, but I haven't played anything real demanding.

I have 2 computers running UD still, so I'll probably just keep that configuration also. One of them is a dual athlon MP, so I'm a bit curious if the forthcoming UD client will be that much better.
