Folding Rig October 2010?

not bad but for that id take 1 gtx 460 out and put a x6 1090T instead of the x2 240.. get more PPD out of the x6 then a gtx 460 while using less power.. or hell just put all 4 gtx 260's and a 1090T.. rig would do about 55k PPD :p
 
Whay I was thinking is if a i7 oced to do bigadvs would be better $ and KWh wise?
 
But then you'd have to avoid GPU folding, and an i7 at 4.2 should do good on bigadv's

problem is that bigadv WU's arent guaranteed.. while A3's and gpu WU's are.. so if you dont get a bigadv WU your talking about losing 10k+ PPD..
 
He's got a point, and normal SMP is much more forgiving to a ppd lose of a gpu than a bigadv is

meh... even with regular A3 you can expect 15kpdd out of an i7 at 4ghz, and you can build 2 for $1,370. You get 1-2 bigadvs and your week average is ~40kppd, more points, less watts.
But then again gpus are easier to setup.

(I still love my 9800gx2s and 8800gs. They are still producing some good numbers, 5200-6000ppd per core for gx2, 3500-5200ppd for 88gs... and they don't use the cpu.)
 
No. SR-2 and eBay L5640's is by far the best f@h machine I've built, power $ to PPD usage. No comparison.

GPU folders are an easy way to make your electric company love you. Going cpu only will help drastically. You can then not only save on energy bill, but save on psu cost as well.

agree'd.. but its pretty hard to find an SR-2 now and while yes the L5640's are great your not going to find much more of them soon.. never can figure out why Intel always floods the market with ES chips.. but what ever better for the more informed consumers i guess..
 
Drop two 460s, upgrade to an LGA1366 setup with a 930 or 950, and overclock the thing. That would be a much better plan.
 
Im pretty sure you could do a i7-970 for that money or at least very close.
 
that rig is nice, but the cpu is a joke....

SR-2 is the way to go now for folding, so that rig is a little on the, uh, NO side.....

Plus it needs something, like an antec 900 or something.

Forget my idea, cpu(2), mobo, memory, psu, video cards and cooling fans put me just over $6,000 on the egg.....
SR-2 mobo, 2x W5590, 4x 460, 1250 classified psu, corsair 6gb ddr-2000 (x2), Xigmatec thors hammer and 4 fans for push pull, sheesh...
