Folding Question

Ok, I've contemplated using some spare boxes to 'Fold', but I have a few concerns:

Distributed computing aka 'Folding' to fight cancer etc has been around since *at least* 1997 (that's when I first heard of it). Tell me, with all of the PCs around the world running this stuff, has anyone actually "found" or "cured" anything yet? (as a result or contribution from folding)

I ask the question because my boss says it's pure advertising / marketing /geek boy competition / hype. Please, no flames -- this is an honest question.

Hello, i've been folding for about two weeks now... anyway... how come we have more WUs done than the aussies, but somehow we have a lower score.. how is the score decided?

THanks

simple answer is we've done shorter WUs. And shorter WUs have less value to keep the score fair. the longer the WU takes (as long as it's BENCHMARKED to take), the more points it's worth. hope i explained it ok ;)

Not even just that, but the point system has changed drastically. We used to have a lot more production than OCAU did, before the point totals were as large as they are today. So, we got more work units done then for less points. They have since added to their procuction more than we have, so their work units that have completed have been worth more points than the abundance of ones we completed in the past.

Also, maybe we just have a bunch of unstable boxen on our team whose units die in the middle of folding. Those things aren't worth anything, but still count for a WU.

Who knows?

The folding program benchmarks you're rig, and decides type of unit to send you. My baby rig get's tiny Gromacs, but finishes 3 a day . Roughly 52 points per. My monster rig gets the new Gromacs at@182 points per. But they take me @ 23 1/2 HRs per. Tinkers take my fastest P4 rig @ 35 HRs each. Some machines are just better suited to folding than others. 64bit AMD's are probly the best. Don't sweat the small stuff, fold the best you can. The time limits are extremely long in my experience. usually 3 weeks or more. Never failed to meet one, even on slowest rig, running a Tinker. It happens. There are some prolific producers here on the team that use a crap load of 700-800MHz AMD rigs. Sheer numbers, outproduce monster power on minimal rigs. Unless you can afford a few dozen G5's, the climb is a slow one, but worth it. It is truly a shame that we are losing Midnight, gonna need 5 or 6 hundred new joins to replace the horsepower. Unfortunatly, most folks fold for a WU or 2 and quit. Any contribution is appreciated. Talk you're buds into joining the team (harder than it sounds, most folks are terrified of even trying).

I have crashed my system so many times, I quit counting. It's no big deal in most cases. Try OC'ing a rig by 25% or more and you know what I mean. But some folks freak out, if IE can't access a page. I use Firefox, and it routinely refuses to load a page (malicious code detected), no biggie, I didn't need to go there anyways. Porn surfers need access at any cost, even if it means destroying they're rigs. I have one referral that has blown past me, and is inside the top 450 on the team. If we could all get a couple such referals, This team would me unbeatable, even by our esteemed collegues from down under. They have 3,000 extra CPU's, we need to narrow the gap.

I only have 3 computers at my disposal, and all fold for the team.If we can each find a hundred fearless buds to fold for the team, we win. If we can only get 10 pals folding for the team, we still win. Every CPU we get, is one step closer to regaining the top spot.
