Folding over network

Is it possible to fold over a network? I would like to set up folding so that all the data goes to one computer. That way, the other ones can spin down the hard drives and save a little extra power. Anyone doing this right now?

I have a network drive setup on my work pc that it saves the data too when I fold. I don't know that it will allow for it to spin down the hard drive though. I usually don't let it get that idle.

What would be the requirements on the networked PC's? If they aren't needing a functional OS for other than folding, you can give Mage's Fold Server a try and completely knock out the Hard Drives out ofthe equation.

Another possible way might be to have a standard "server" and run the clients through that

Share all computers on net,

on server have

F@H 1
F@H 2
etc
share the folders on the network

then on each computer open a respective folder, run program...

(even though its more complicated to set up Mage's server works well if you don't need those computers for anything else)

Yeah--put the FAH folder on a (mapped) network drive, and run it from there. I should have thought of this earlier....

Just make sure that each computer has its OWN mapped folder on the server. Dont let multipule computers run from the same mapped folder

Yea what he said :)

oh, and don't forget to change the process number too in advance settings (machine 1-8 etc)

just so things don't get too confused :)

Why would he need to set a different machineID for each box, assuming one CPU per box?

No clue what K* is talking about.

I just started doing this on workstations people actually use. Try 1 did not work out well... was saving to a box with IDE drives--- I think there is just something flat out wrong with that box.

Scheduled tasks> Run task when system is in idle > Run //server/userfahfolder/fahconsole.exe -local -forceasm

Run in //server/userfahfolder/

Set password (I used admin/domainPW)
Make sure to un check stop if task runs for more than 72 hours

I checked stop task is system is no longer in idle

Way cool, users can never tell it's there. Can see task in scheduled tasks, don't think they can change. Yea, loose a ton tiem folding but can't possible (I hope) piss off the users. Task stops about 4 seconds after machine starts being used.

Spinning the disks down, no clue.

I wouldn't think the computer would let the HD spin down, cause folding is always using some of the pagefile, unless I'm on crack.

I think if you've got Windows on those drives they won't spin down at all. You can try, of course, but I think that there are enough background services occasionally hitting the disk that it'd spin down anyways.

My experience with spinning down disks: I set the (fairly loud at the time) drive on my media box to spin down one evening every 4 minutes. Well, it turns out that every five minutes something hit the disk. So, if you think having a drive spinning loudly is bad, try spinning loudly, then spinning down and back up every 5 minutes. I took the thing out and got it to boot over network. That'll show it ;)

Just on the off chance that the task computer (s) got removed, or he tried to upload the units just from running them off the host computer. That way nothing gets confused..

Thanks for all the help. I'll give it a try and see if the disks spin down. I don't have any dedicated folding machines - I can't afford that much computer or noise. The computer I would like to have spin down the drives has 2 hard drives and runs a rather toasty 100 degress F on just the internals.

Sounds like you need something to help keep that case cool... mod's to add 120 fans?

It's already got 3 120's, plus a Zalman 7000CU. It's in too small a space, the desk doesn't have very good ventilation.
