hi,

thinking about buying a new server for the house. it has quad p3 xeons 733mhz and 1gb ram. is it worth folding on in its spare cycles?

If you set it up with the SMP client, then absolutely, it's worth setting up to fold. The SMP client is Linux- and MacOS-only at this point, so I hope you were planning on installing Linux...

to be honest i wasn't planning on it. oh well i will use another machine instead. hoping to setup:

2,4ghz p4 512mb ram
1.8ghz athlon xp 512mb ram } dedicated
2x p3 733mhz 512mb ram
p3 933mhz 256 ram

2x p3 733 mhz 786mb ram
sempron 1.6ghz 512mb ram } when turned on
sempron 1.6 256 ram

There around 10Ghz of Folding power there.
It will net you around 500 PpD.
A single C2D or X2 system running a 64 bit Linux and the SMP client will pull in close to double that.
And use a lot less power.

If you need to buy [H]ardware to fold on, your a lot better buying dual core CPU's that support 64 bit OS's and building around that.

My critiria for a folding box used to be 2 Ghz or faster.
Its now 500 Points per Day or better.
Any box that does not do that gets switched off.
Thinking of switching Piglet Boxen off ( dual 2.4Ghz Opterons ) because I cannot get the onboard nic to work under 64 bit Linux, hence it only pulls in 250-300 PpD.
But then again I an learning Linux the [H]ard way.

Luck ............... :D

how many points will a x1950pro give me per day on average?

If I recall correctly, at 3D clocks, it's roughly 660ppd, and at 2D clocks, 440ppd.

cheers. am tempted to get one of them with a cheap core 2 duo.... hmmm
