folding on i7 with GPU

just got my i7 rig up and running and what better thing to setup right away than F@H!

that being said, before i dive into bigadv, i just want to get regular smp folding up and running.

i know windows smp only supports 4 cores, i already have my 2 SMP clients running, but do i need to do anything special since i'm going to fold with my GPU also?

should i set one SMP to -smp3? i just want to get the most ppd out of it :) (before i get to the bigadv stuff)

The new SMP2 client supports more than 4 cores. You will likely see more PPD if you drop one client and use the -smp 8 flag in your shortcut. Finish the WU in the second client (use the -oneunit flag) and then restart the other client with the -smp 8 flag. This assumes you have hyperthreading enabled for 8 threads. I don't know if your system will require any prioritising to maximize the production of your GPU client because every system seems to be different. Try it without setting affinity/priority and see how your GPU PPD works out.

OK, well, unfortunately both of these WUs are A1 WUs and not only is the new bonus points system not applicable to them, but they run slower and what's worse, do not run on more than 4 cores. So, you might be better off running two clients at this point but if both your clients download A3 WUs for their next work, they will be producing a net loss aggregate PPD versus a single client with the -smp 8 flag and one A3 WU. Mind you, one cannot guess which WUs Stanford will send at any particular time, so I have no recommendation for you on how you should run your setup. There are conflicting opinions currently on what to do in regards to SMP2. If you have a high enough clock frequency, you are much better of just running the -bigadv flag in a Linux VM.

Ha! I'm Not the only one getting A1s lol. Sorry had to

anyways, you forgot the -advmethods flag

you should have client 6.29, then uses these flags

-advmethods -smp 8 -verbosity 9

Yep, the -advmethods flag will allow the downloading of A3 WUs but there might be the occasional A1 WU received. I would still run a Linux VM and use the -bigadv flag. Keep in mind that to be eligible for the bonus system you need to get a passkey.

well since i was only 3% in, i just cleared out my work folder, threw in those flags, and now i have this big sucker and it's using all my cores :)

What he said, but if you are just getting your passkey issued to you, you have to break it in first

To get the bonus you need:
10 completed A2 or A3 WU's using that passkey
maintain a 80% or better completion rate using that passkey

So, in overview you should...
1) Run the windows SMP client 6.29
# use flags -advmethods -smp 8 -verbosity 9
# don't forget to enter your passkey in this client, you need to build up a base to collect that bonus
2) Run the GPU client (I'm mobile so I can't see your sig/what card you have)
3) Be ready to run an affinity changer if needed, we can help

after a few days of crunching A3s you can move up to a Linux VM for bigadv, but for now you should stay A3 and earn the bonus

ok, i just put my passkey in my config file and restarted f@h, that should be fine right?

and whats this business with the affinity changer? (i'm familiar with doing it via the task manager)

Not saying you'll need it, but with some people running SMP and GPU clients at the same time causes adrastic point reduction because the clients both fight fo CPU time

Some have it happen, others are just fine

Again, I can't see what card you are running but if you notice a huge drop in ppd vs what you were/should be getting you may need to use an affinity app like WinAFC to adjust affinity
It can be done In the task manager but it's not recomended as that won't be permanent

And I'm not sure if that will work with the passkey, I only just started folding with a key yesterday so well have to wait for someone else on that

i'm running a Sapphire 2gb 4890 Vapor X and was getting roughly 2500-3000 PPD out of it in XP

why the drop in credit for the A3?

Your PPD seems inline, but just a FYI, ATI cards are more CPU hungry than Nv, once you start getting a few units done (tomorrow should be fine) ask around the forum for a number check and they'll tell you if it's low. Your not getting the bonus and I'm only familiar with the bonus figures. I think mine runs slow too but Im not getting bonus so I could be just fine

You may need to tone that back with an affinity changer. Since I'm mobile now and you need A3s Id just shut off the GPU client for the night, let you i7 get pounding on the bonus, and sorryabout everything else tomorrow

alrighty, i'll shut off my GPU. tomorrow i'm going to work on getting this i7 OC'd so i can make a bigger dent in those bigadv's

That's something you'll need to determine on your rig. Is the GPU client worth running for the PPD it's producing or is it just better to let all cores process the SMP client? If you have only one GPU client and it's an Ati that consumes a lot of CPU cycles, it might not be worth running it at all because it's dragging your SMP production down. Do what Vaulter suggested and try running with and then without it, and then compare your total PPD. Decide what's better for you. You will also consume much less power without the GPU client so if it still proves advantageous to run, that could affect your decision.

Exactly what I'm doing

anyways, not sure if youre new here but welcome

If you ever have questions, just ask, as you can see sometimes were up pretty late, Im up all night 4-5 a week now

wow, i cant' believe @ the difference it made.

my TPF went from 9:15 to 4:25!

so my PPD with GPU & SMP (no bonus) = ~4800
and my PPD with just SMP (no bonus) = ~7000

easy choice for me!!! :D

and i've been a member here for about 3 years, just don't post much as i belong to another forum ;)

It doesn't matter which team you're on. If you're folding we will help regardless. BTW, you might still see a bigger PPD if you run the -bigadv client.

oh you were referring to F@H? ya I don't fold for [H] as i've been folding for my other forum for about 6 years now ;)

bigadv only works on linux correct? I definitely plan on doing that and dual booting with w7 pro. as I have no problems switching back to w7 when i want to game. otherwise my time spent on my PC is spent browsing the net :)

and from what i've read running native linux has a better PPD than running it in a VM

...and from what i've read running native linux has a better PPD than running it in a VM
Yes, it probably does but it will vary depending on which distro you run. Nevertheless, you'll likely get a higher PPD running -bigadv in a VM than the SMP2 client you're running now.

Good eye, that's HFM, that's with the bonus. I thought it was fahmon, withoutthe bonus, which would put you rght on track

it's been a long night...

damnit, i didn't mess with the power settings in w7 and 30 mins after i went to sleep... so did my PC.

You sure your oc is stable and that's not why it shutdown?
I don't mess with the power settings either and it shouldn't shut the computer down unless it's idle (and not at load). While at load the computer should never shut off even if you have it set to power off. (That's been my experience at least.)

Ya, power settings, screen saver, always first to go, did what you did too many times :)

my rig isn't OC'd yet, bone stock speeds

bah, i keep getting the a1 core, is there any way to make sure i get a3's?

edit: there we go, i just kept deleting my work folder/que until i got an a3

edit2: also, how come in hfm, the credit listed for an a3 for example was ~76k, then it drops to ~33k and keeps dropping?

also regarding the pass key, does that apply to ONLY a3 cores?

and i just finished my first a3 about 20 mins ago, but the points for it aren't showing up on the extreme folding site... :-/

HFM calculates bonus, and bonus is calculated by how fast you can return the WU, and that speed is calculated by how many %'s you have done so far, so in the beginning it's gonna be off but it will correct itself over time.

As for not seeing the points, stats are updated every 3 hours, and it may take up to to refreshes, so If you dont see anything in 6 hours, then I'd ask, but refreshes are every 3 hours

lol, nevermind i just got another one, this one was 40 points. TPF~5seconds. they happen so fast i didn't even notice, lol
