I am very happy to announce that a first key work from the Folding@home project on Alzheimer's Disease (AD) was just published

Simulating oligomerization at experimental concentrations and long timescales: A Markov state model approach, by Nicholas W. Kelley, V. Vishal, Grant A. Krafft, and Vijay S. Pande. J. Chem. Phys. 129, 214707 (2008); DOI:10.1063/1.3010881

Abeta misfolding and aggregation is believed to be the cause of Alzheimer's Disease. Simulations, like Folding@home, are a natural way to understand this process. However, there are several key challenges for simulating the key step -- oligomerization. This work represents a new way to simulate Abeta oligomerization, with a key advance of being able to simulate experimentally relevant timescales and concentrations, using a novel method. We use this new method and the power provided by Folding@home donors to simulate oligomerization in all-atom detail. This has lead to specific predictions about the process, which we are now testing experimentally.

In many ways, this paper is the "tip of the iceberg" for the Folding@home activities in AD, with a lot more interesting results to come, especially in terms of experimental tests of our predictions and interesting new possibilities for new drugs and AD therapeutics. So, while we're excited that this result is now past peer review, we're even more excited for what's coming down the pipeline, waiting peer review. We'll keep you posted as more results become public, hopefully with some even bigger announcements in 2009.

I'm sure those who are concerned about AD research would be interested to read this :)

 Woot , thanks a moondo for the heads up brother Xilikon :p I have no ideer' what "Abeta oligomerization" is or are, but I'm reasonably sure the medical proffessionals at Stanbford do. ;)
I honestly hope publications like this put a rest to some of the paranoid conspiracy theories like the ones that suspect the F@H project is something other than a medical research project. Where the fu*ck they get dumb a$$ ideas like that I'll never know.(and I don't really want to know, I'm still havin' problems with the "tooth fairy" theory)

Folding and WCGing for the CURE

Nice to know all those SMP WU went to good use

nice thanks for the info.. even though i understand nothing in that article :p

Great to hear, I'm new to F@H so I don't suppose I contributed any to this, but it's a good motivator to keep me onboard !

This is great news. Its great to think I helped with something like this. Go [H]orde!

Just to clarify what the paper is about.

Before they can do simulation work on AD, they need to find what's the best computation model. The paper show what is the optimal model and how simulation can help understand AD. With the model in place, they are in business to start computation to understand and test cures for AD.

Usually, finding how to model atoms and compute protein folding is often the hardest part with lots of trial and error. When this is settled, they will be able to do it accurately which mean more useful workunits coming soon and for those who bitch about big atoms and low ppd, it's a price to pay to do useful work.

gotcha thanks xilikon :p lol my brain only computes system building and overclocking.. not science :p

Bring on the big nasty WU!

I just hope the put an upload limiter into future clients. That would be awesome!

Please brother don_xvi, don't belittle your future contributions, welcome aboard. . Just remember the famous expression "We ain't begun to fight just yet" (or something like that ) We's a' gonna' whip some major disease's rear end hole (my very own sayin')

Folding and WCGing for the CURE

Folding is a road, not a destination so everyone is welcome ;)

It's been around about as long as I've been a member of the [H], well before I started folding.

my bad... no credit for you Xil!

I've been a member here for years... but only recently came back to the forums...

I think we might be able to blame relic ;)

Yeah, I'll second that. The first time I read that line about folding being a road and not a destination was in a post by that "old timer" brother relic.

I only became aware of the saying about 2 years ago. I'm sure it's much older than that. I have automatically attributed it to brother relic. He has been know to include many inspiring sayings in his posts. Thanks F@H relic (or WCG relic[H] :D)

Yes, it's relic who said this a few times.

Remember, it's always relic fault ;)
