folding faster in linux or xp?

does anyone know if f@h runs faster in windows or linux? i suppose i could run it in each for a few days to check, but i was just wondering if anyone already knew the answer, or if its the same in each. as far as my distribution goes i have fedora core 3 installed. its 64-bit but i don't think that matters since there is no f@h client specifially written for that architecture.

Stanford benches useing an Intel 2.8 running Linux at 110 Points per Day.
That works out at 1.63 Points per Hour per Ghz.
Double that if running big packet work units.

My AMD's running Windozes adverage 1.6 to 2.7 PpHpG for small packet stuff and 3.3 to 7 PpHpG for big packet work units.

The difference is from three reasons I can think of........
1:- Bad benchmarking. ??????, You get the odd protien that folds fast.
2:- Change from Intel to AMD's. Opterons run 15% - 100% faster than XP's > P4 on a pure Ghz basis.
3:- Change from Linux to Windozes. Don't think this will have much of an impact but it may.

Luck........ :D

If you run Linux, switch to " init 3 '' , you should be able to get an extra 10% worth of speed out of that box, dont forget the " -advmethods '' flag .

Why does Linux (whatever flavor you choose) fold a given protein faster than with Windows?

Is it because of the fine tuning you can do with linux? coupled with the bloated-ness of Windows? or is it based on the Folding client (is the linux client more efficient??)

Keep on Folding!!

I'm about to set up a small linux netbooting network in my dorm room, but am still in the planning stage. My question is: where do i 'switch to "init 3"'? Thanks.

1)press Ctrl - Alt - F2 at the same time.
2)log in as root
3)type in
Code:
init 3
that will turn off X and other stuff that uses cpu cycles, networking will still work
4)Log in as User ( that you fold under )
5)type in the folding.exe command, to get it folding again

6)..... profit

w00t! May I suggest fold-server? My own distro, so I can answer questions on it, it's easy to set up and reliable, the clients (and the server by default, but easy to change) all run in init 3. Works on as little as 128mb of memory for the clients. I haven't had any downloads, so I'm kinda desperate for someone to try it and tell me what's good and what needs work...

Pleeease? ;)

You win. :D. Yeah, it won't be much of a network, but i've got a 500MHz PII headless right now clawing through WUs now in WIN2KS (is there a way to save all that work so it's not useless?) and when i get my 1.8GHz Duron that's in the mail i'll set that up as the server (hopefully some time by the end of this week). I've also got a 300MHz AMD K6 with 132MB of ram that i'll probably put to work chewing timeless units, but that will be outta commision until i can find another NIC to put in that, as i'm currently going to part the NIC out of that for the second NIC in the server.

Sos i won't be too off-topic here, i'm just gonna go ahead and start a new thread here, since i'm gonna go ahead and do that anyway so i can get this thing on it's feet as fast as possible.

Yes, copy the whole FAH folder and then when you set it back up it will start back on the WU already there! ;)

And that works even across operating systems? So all i have to do is replace the executable? (however that's spelled..)

You need the entire folder where it is installled to. So in there will be (work folder), logfile, 1-3
different cores, xyz file, those are the files off the top of my head. You should get the idea though!
As for the changing of OS, you should be able to replace the previous EXE for the new EXE that matches the OS you are using.
Hope this helps and good luck! :D
