Okay guys... it's been a long time since I've had any spare time to update this beast...... alot has happened in the last few months (getting married and buying a house will take away alot of your free time), and I have a few questions....


1. I'm preparing for a major overhaul of the pages, but I wanted to make sure I had a real reason to do so, and, I didn't want to waste time fixing info that people didn't care about anymore (older processors,etc)..... So I guess, it's this thing worth updating? Will it be useful to you guys once I get it all updated with the C2Ds/etc?


2. Monarch Computers, is, as far as I'm concerned, no longer..... which leaves a open slot for price comparisons.... So what other store(s) would you guys like to see? After you guys give me some of your favorite trusted/cheap/etc stores, I'll see what the consensus is, and see if I can grab prices,etc from them....


3. Of the platforms listed, many are outdated, or falling quickly out of date...... What do you guys think is missing and what would you like to see added in?


Any input is welcome... the good, the bad, the ugly....

I like to use newegg.com and pcmall.com
I know someone who works at pcmall.com so I get major discounts, if you'd like, I can email him a list of parts to get prices on.

I think for the spreadsheets, could you use a slightly larger font?

(Oops, I just noticed you already have newegg on there)

Perhaps you could include average overclocking possibilities? I know that a lot of the Core 2 Duo's can do around 10% almost easily thanks to built in motherboard programs that run from Windows!

When taking the extreme amount of PPD for a dual-core solution into account, I really don't think that you should bother updating anything that is single-core.

A nice feature would be a ``buy that mooselover'' button that swoops the folder off to the cheapest retailer and fills the shopping cart. Surely this would require some hand-holding on the retailers' part. Hello newegg representative, are you reading this?

Anything that does not have a dual-core options can go. Honestly, I am not going to spend money on any platform that does not fold SMP units.
 
I only buy from NewEgg these days.

I hate buying stuff with rebates, but sometimes I still do. But the day-in and day-out prices at NewEgg seem reasonable to me. And their customer service is superior. And I have never gotten ripped off.

Anyone have any favorite e-tailers I don't know about?
 
My prefs would be to drop anything not dual core. This will affect mainly the Celerons I figure. Also, I like the base packages that are setup. I get my processors from work anyways and like to use those as the setups for them. Ewiz would be one that I would like to see in the product comparison list also. However, they change their prices from different search engines. Would have to be a denotes for them or something.

If you want to really cut down on your work, you can just drop the AMDs all together. HA! :p
 
I must second the "drop all but dual cores"-when a dual core is 71.00 (805) or 85.00(1.9 brisbane-AM2).

All of us folders in Canada generally run into a lot of red tape purchasing from some of the American e-tailers (like newegg).. so generally I shop at http://www.ncix.com/ which has decent prices and ships to both the US and Canada.. They kick the crap out of TigerDirect for prices (be sure to click on the american flag in the top left corner to view things in US$ instead of Cdn$.) Would be nice to have a store on the spreadsheet that both Americans and Canadians can buy from. (Another one would be tigerdirect.com, but their prices aren't as good.)

I have no problem including a Canadian only site... or one that caters to both... I just need to be able to grab the prices from whatever website we choose....

as for the dual core thing, I was kinda thinking the same thing.... back when the GPUs were out, I thought about trying to include them also, but I got sidetracked on that and I'm not sure where I am on those right now (I'm at home, and I don't have my spreadsheet here)...

As for improvements, I've been looking into php/etc and trying to figure out how to make this thing semi-automated... so far I haven't had much luck, because my only spare time has been at work, and I can't install any server-side programs to tinker with..... so I may get into that a little this weekend if I can... it all depends on how long it takes me to rewire the next section of the basement.....

Any other ideas for improvements and/or e-tailers?

Okay, I've been playing around with a couple ideas/etc... I've been thinking about killing off a number of columns on the sheets... Well, let me rephrase that....

I added a column (Order Code/OPN PIB) to make sure that each store was selling the same chip/etc.... I also added a column to say whether the chip was a single core, dual or quad..... Needless to say, it made and already REALLY wide chart, alot wider...... So I'm thinking about removing alot of the basic descriptive things, like the BUS, Cache,etc, in favor of creating a link to the Processor Specs given by Intel/AMD...

that's where I got all of that info from in the first place.......

Edit--- I guess I should add in that I also made a page for the PS3, but I'm definately going to have to get some other etailers in there just to make it worthwhile....

Okay guys.... here's a significant update for you...

Realization hit me the other day that I could probably make an Excel macro to create an html page..... turns out you can... and after bastardizing example html code and example VB code until I got everything to look good, and learning a little CSS, I came up with this...

This should make the future contest stats alot easier to produce, and keep my life simple (as I won't have to learn php or mysql or anything in order to better produce my folding farm spreadsheet

Let me know what you guys think.... the colors are easily changable... if fact, now, lots of things are.....

The power supply on the socket 775 is a way different price then the AMD power supply. Also, its link dosen't work.

Any reason for the different ram? Cheaper mobo for Socket 775? Will those Xeon 3000 series work in these boards?
 
PSU problem(s) fixed, but not updated on the web as of yet.... Still looking into the Xeon thing, I keep getting conflicting info... some say that the Xeon 3xxx series will work on any C2D compatible board, but other places say not.... Anyone know for sure?

The ram, I had just forgotten to update the AM2 page....

I'm open to advice/etc on hardware... I used that Gigabyte board because I figured it would allow for a decent OC.... I've not built any system faster than a P4 Northwood as of yet, so I may not know all the little pitfalls/etc associated with the newer hardware.... In other words, suggestions/corrections welcome!

I figured I'd post an update since AMD cut alot of their prices recently....

Here is a full update of everything I have so far... Right now, that's only dual core Socket 775 and dual core Socket AM2.... I'm still looking into Socket F, Socket L, and a couple others....

As said before, I'm not sure it's worth it to include single core at this point, but I may or may not add them in later on....

Anyone other input/suggestions/criticisms/etc/etc?

The power supply for the Socket 775 isn't linking up right. Also, for the Socket 479 C2D mobile processor, the Aopen Mini PC might be the way to go for them. FLECOM was looking at one, dunno if he got it though.

It's actually socket 479Y or Socket M for the Yonah (Core Duo) and Merom (Core 2 Duo) and Sossaman (LV Xeon) processors. Newegg always screws up the socket when listing the Mobile platforms as they list it as 478 or 479, it's almost always easier to just search by chipset. 945GM and 945GT are the correct mobile chipsets for them although Aopen has a 975 crossfire capable board as well but it has been discontinued. Microcenter still has it though for half price, atleast in store. Next month we'll get the Santa Rosa mobile platform with Socket P and the 800 FSB Meroms. Can't wait, been holding off on a new laptop until now.
 
Thanks for the info... posted an update with a few fixes here and there..... mainly to the html code.... figured I'd run it through a W3.org 's validators... showed me a few mistakes here and there...

I thought Santa Rosa was Socket F?

Don't you love when Intel and AMD decide to use the same name. Santa Rosa is the new Centrino Pro platform for Intel which uses socket P. On the AMD side, it's the newer core of the Socket F opterons.

How are the KWh per year figured? I can get you info on TDP for chipset and processor combos if you need them. 1 I saw for example is the E6700 is listed at 877KWh per year. The documentation that I have shows it to be more arround 847 KWh per year. It's not far off, but I can get the info down to even just the chipset TDP.
 
I based it all on assumption (at least for the MB/etc combos).... and add in the peak usage (89W,etc)....

Here's the formula I've used for the past few years:

(((CPU watts+motherboard assummed watts)*number of CPUs*3600)/(1000*3600))*8766


Any info you can get would be greatly appreciated.... you've helped alot with pointing out mistakes/suggesting alt. hardware/etc....

just follow US 50 east, and you'll eventually come to Clarksburg, and the I-79/US 50 interchange is about a mile from where I'm sitting as I type this.... Have a safe trip....
