Folding - CPU Shutdown problem - NEED HELP!!

Hey all, I've been folding on my Barton 2500+ @ 3200+ for well over a month now 24/7. Today I decided to clean the dust out of my machine and re-apply thermal paste to the proc. After doing so, and putting the machine back together, I booted up my machine and folding ran for about 2 minutes and then my machine TOTALLY shut down. It didn't lock, didn't freeze, didn't reboot, just shut down. It took me about 10 minutes what it was, but the problem looks like it's folding.

At first I thought it may be because it's using up 100% of the CPU, but after playing call of duty for 20 minutes without a problem, i'm pretty sure that it has something to do with the folding client. I've also tried underclocking down to the default speeds; no go. Does ANYONE have an idea as to what it may be? It's very frustrating!!! Thanks!

Stats:

Win XP Professional
Barton 2500+ @ 3200+
2 x 256 Corsair XMS PC3200 2-3-3-6
WD 80 gig special edition
450 watt powersupply

Thermal throttling is disable
Temps are at 45 degrees

First thing I'd do is make sure I've the most recent clients and cores. They have another core out that you have to look for.
Also try running it using 50% of the CPU cycles to see if that causes a shutdown.

xnoto,
It would appear that first folding was fine, then you modified your hardware (clean, repaste, reseat), and then folding crashes the system. That would lead me to suspect that the hardware modifications are the source of the problem, and folding's 100% cpu useage is the catalyst.

You report your temps at 45C. I'm assuming that is your socket temperature. That certainly seems good. How are you checking it? You might check your temps using something like Motherboard Monitor that will give you temps for case, socket, and diode. Since you reseated your heatsink, I would be suspicious that there could be something amiss there. After all, folding was working OK before the cleaning.

I'd also delete your FahCore_78.exe. The client will download the latest one which has resolved all lockups on my AMD 2600+.

By the way, I noticed yesterday that a protein I was folding caused my AMD to really heat up for a minute -- diode temp is usually 59 to 60, and it spiked to 67 sounding an alarm in Motherboard Monitor. Perhaps you're chewing on one of those "hot" proteins...?

Hope you get that Barton back folding!

Thanks Celerator, i'm going to reinstall folding when I get home from work. It was very odd because everything seemed to go amiss after just cleaning dust and reapplying thermal paste to the proc! And yes, you're correct, my cpu temps are 45 degrees.

I'm hoping nothing is wrong with the hardware, because I really enjoy that unlocked barton.

Just a quick thought...I've done the cleaning thing as well, but sometimes I've had the machine enter the bios on re-boot. Any chance that happened and you reset, or forgot to change any settings?

Fold on

Sounds like an unhapilly seated something. I tore my SFF apart a month and a half ago, and it's still not running properly. CPU overheat keeps on kicking in. May have to bite the bullet and take it apart a third time.

Good luck.

Hmm wierd,

I reset the bios and the cpu was running at 1100 mhz. I folded for 24 hours on that without it shutting down. When I tweaked my bios back to my normal settings and ran folding, it shutdown promptly. I also uninstalled/reinstalled the folding client. It still shutdown.

I then thought it may be my ram timings (2 3 3 6) or cpu so I moved them back to 2.5 3 3 8 and set my proc at 11 x 185; folding has been running strong for 24 hours without a hitch.

I'll look into it more tonight when I get home, but i'm narrowing down the problem.

Also, heat is becoming an issue, I'm cooling it with an SLK-800A and thermaltake 80mm fan that pushes 80cfm and my idle temps are 50 degrees

Another quick thought, are you sure your heatsink is facing the right way? Remember, it's stepped on one side as is your socket.

Been there;)

Yeah, its an SLK800A, there isn't really a wrong way to put it on because of it's design.

I have a dozen of these heatsinks and they can be installed backwards. That would be very bad for a CPU if the heatsink was on backwards. It would only contact the CPU on one side and very little at that.

the temps weren't that high before you cleaned... so PLEASE double/triple check your heatsink (like take it off and put it back on with the proper amount of thermal paste)... HEY! I don't know your level of expertise, so don't be offended... but do you know you should only use a "haze" worth of the goop? I see people all the time putting on piles and then having higher temps (and thinking its normal) I take the HS off, reduce the paste to a haze, and they lose 3-5c.
