On a P4 2.6ghz(single proc) box running XP Pro I just noticed that FAH is only using 50% processor and system idle time is using the other 50%. I have tried to up the priority in the fah config and in xp but it stays the same. I'm sure this has been discussed before but I find no mention of it or I'm just that bad at searching.. Any ideas?? Was using the 4.0 but have just upgraded to 5.02. It was 50% for both ver...:?

Agree with above, it's likely that you have HT enabled. This is normal for windows to report this. It's actually using 100% of the CPU.

I'm an AMD man, I honestly don't know a thing about hyperthreading except that certain Intel chips have it. A search in XP help & support reveals nothing helpful. How would I check to see if it is enabled or not?? :(

I am an AMD man as well....but I would assume that it is a BIOS setting.

Intel guys, correct me if I am wrong
:)

Ctrl-Alt-Del to open Windozes Task Manager and click the performance tab.
Then if needed View -> Cpu history -> One graph per cpu.
If under CPU Useage History there are two graphs then you have HyperThreading enabled.

If you set it likea duallie then each client will fold slower but you will do about 15% more work in total.

Luck............ :D

Having a P4 with the CPU usage stuck solidly at 50% without configuring the client to use 50% is almost always a sure sign of hyperthreaditis. The only cure is to fire up a second instance of the client to regain some of your lost points!

Agreed!!

As a P4 2.4C owner and operator I have 2 instances running on my P4 with HT... it was even better when I was "working" on my co-worker's son's Dual P4 Xeon...... 4 instances... one box......... helped out quite a bit :D

Ok, looks as if HT is enabled. Now, as for firing up another instance of FAH?? I installed into a diff dir and changed the machine ID from 0 to 1 or from 1 to 2 but I get the msg that another instance is already running and it quits. I people do this all the time, what blatantly obvious step am I missing here??

Since I'm a console version kind of guy and have done this many times and never seen that problem, I just have to ask...are you using the console version?

the other thing you might want to consider doing (if you're using the console version), is to rename the second *.exe..... I do that just so I know which process to kill if/when I need to....

Keep on Folding!!

I've always assumed I was using the console version, I never liked the screensaver ver. Ahh, no, been using the graphical ver  . Guess its time for a switch and use it as a service... ;)

Edit:

All seems well in the land of HT and multiple instances of F@H running as a service :D  Thanks all for your help, suggestions and ideas...

Glad we could help out!!

If I remember right, you may see a 10% increase in the pts/week from that machine...

Keep on Folding!!
