Signup for Quake Con hasn't started, but I'm getting ready.

What are your suggestions for getting 2 laptops (and subsequent equipment) through airports without damage?

They would be carry on. Clothes will be set to baggage...but the laptops come with me.
 
just don't leave them on cause they will crash the plane! lol :D

If that were really true why aren't there thousands of terrorists flying all over the US secretly leaving their laptops and cellphones on?? :D

I don't know how serious you are, but it's my understanding that electrical devices are asked to turned off during take off and landing because they can interfere with the plane's ability to communicate with the control tower. They won't drive the plane into the ground, but they could make the pilot's job more difficult or even cause an accident.
 
they just make you turn them off during take off and landing because they can mess up the radio signals. thats all. depending on the port they might swab the plastic to make sure its not made of an explosive, possibly ask you to turn it on, but thats it.
 
my main concern was actually the x-ray machines....

the list of things I'd take with me are:

Emachines M6805: (I'd game on this)
AC Adapter
mouse
External 200gb hdd
External DVD+-RW
Ghost Disc with most recent image.
Spare CDs & DVDs to burn (just in case)
Headphones
Kensington lock
Ratpadz
Surge Protector

IBM X31: (server if they allow people to bring in spare systems, otherwise it'd stay at home)
AC Adapter

you dont put it through the machine, you say 'this is a laptop', they molest it in their way, and youre good to go. some ports might have laptop safe xrays but then, its SAFE, so it wouldnt be a problem


also, gaming on a laptop makes me a sad panda. but thats the A64 laptop isnt it?
 
Will you be flying out of Chicago?

I recently flew up to the Twin Cities out of Midway, and I know that O'Hare has the same policy:

All laptops must be removed from their carrying cases and placed in their own trays when sent through the X-Ray machine.

Two lappies would be quite a load to shuck onto the plane, I'd suggest only bringing one and make sure that you have a very well padded case (things get shuffled around in the overhead bins and whatnot).
 
nope. when i went to florida with my presario 1200, they just put in the xray thing. notthing happened. still works like new. no damage to even the little tiny little chip in there.
