fkng Windows update. I went ahead, I'm doing work anyway, I went ahead and let it go. Stupid POS IE, why does it need an update, you can't polish a TURD. :D

My needs to be re-tweaked oc on my primary took a big crap and blue screened on me during the whole thing.

Reboot, start up VMP (I'll use that short for VMware Player for this thread's sake).
VMP reports that the VM is in use, take ownership? Yea or cancel. I hit cancel, VMP closes. Restart VMP again. Yea, take ownership. 'Cannot take ownership'. Crappers.

[google search vm in use, find page that says delete some of the .lck folders]
Delete .lck folders. Restart VMP. Select VM. VM starts, ./fah6 -bigadv -smp 8. Files status ok. Checkpoints blah blah. EH EH! Everythings ok! Woohoo!

DAMMIT I HATE THE FLUSH!!!! I only like flushing toilets! Not -bigadvs! AAAARGH!!!!!!!!! :mad: :(

Luckily it was a pretty minor flush...around 30% I think? (I've had a 97% one before...I know the pain.)
 
Backup script might have prevented that.. :/

That being said, I've had very similar incidents myself. I think I'll pour one out for all the Bigadv jobs I've lost in the past few months.
 
modified XP on my folders, no win update lol, service was disabled from install

Ohh yeh, I think I do that every other month or so.

I'm pretty sure on Mythbusters, they did in fact polish turds.....

 
Windows update only runs on my systems when I okay it, which is when I'm going to reboot anyway for something unrelated. It's like playing with fire~
 
I just had a wireless card hang up in Linux. Shut down my bigadv unit, reboot a couple of time to get it to pick up again, restart fah, some stupid error, getting work....33% gone, following losing 26% on the previous bigadv yesterday. This system in banned from bigadv units until I get my wireless working solidly. It is too bad - the thing is turning sub-31 minute frames inside a GUI at 3.7 GHz, probably my best ppd/MHz machine.

 
If you absolutely positively need to restart your rig, SUSPEND the VM and after and only after it has suspended, then reboot.

Something that has worked most of the time (only once has it failed), go into VM and run ./folding stop and then power down VM. It'll power up with Windows (assuming you have shortcut in startup).

I never ever just shutdown the VM.

 
As much as I hate IE over firefox...... IE is actually ahead of FireFox....... IE8 finally has full support of HTML5 and IIS3, which is a first for IE. Firefox only supports up to IIS2.5 which is the first time Firefox has been BEHIND IE in some form of way. IE9 is to be released at the END of THIS YEAR, when the new HTML6 standard is unveiled by W3C. M$ promises to make IE9 the first browser to support the new HTML standard (I might be off on the numerical standard #). But needless to say, I am impressed by what IE8 actually supports compared to its older brothers. But like all new M$ stuff, its prone to problems until it gets a buncha updates! :)

Also, HTML5 will take as long to be used as XHTML 1.1 and HTML 4.x, which is to say infinite +1. IE8 still doesn't support elements of CSS2.1 which the other browsers do. From the looks of it IE9 won't be any different.

I have the updates disabled, but while I was doing my freelance work I went ahead and let the update start installing...with the notion that once it was done, if it wanted to restart, I'd postpone the nag screen for the max time which I think is 8 hours? A lot of times I let the updates install (on my whim, not MS's nagging) and the computer doesn't need to restart.

Something caused my crash, could have been my oc (I honestly don't know, but again I need to retweak the oc on this rig, rig 1, anyway). It's not really tied into the update, the update actually finished (IIRC), but then something crashed me and it blue screened. :(

Actually I hate to admit it but IE8 is pretty damn fast, I used it briefly the other day to make sure it was my DSL having speed issues and not something in Fx, and I was surprised how fast IE8 was at loading pages. :eek:
 
Microsoft says IE9 will support HTML5 and CSS3, but in the end HTML5 doesn't bring much new, except simpler tags and few functions which all have great alternatives (ie video tag).. and won't be used until all browser support it .. nothing I'm looking forward too, except less IE6 users out there :p

IE 6/7 should have died before they were released. I still loathe having to support those POSes.

Also, IE sucks because it's so tightly integrated with Windows. It's really hard to ensure that upgrading IE won't break something because some file or setting isn't as expected. That's probably what happened in this case. It's also why IE for the Mac was so much better than IE for Windows :)
 
it's not THAT bad supporting ie6. A :hover fix, png fix, and a few extra lines in the css :p
But the problem is we end up supporting more and more browsers as times passes. 4 ie browsers soon? o_o If only the ie version updates were obligatory.. (oh wait, except for bigadv folders) :p
 
Yeah, the support function for IE6 even if you use div's is a very small task, a single line of code, or if you use DreamWeaver CS4 (like I do), its just a few small settings.

Also, 404...... when m$ brought 8 into the equation, they officially ended support of IE6, now that doesnt mean JACK from a business infrastructure, cause alot of businesses still use the old IE6 backbone and to upgrade is almost not an option. So in a way, even though M$ dropped support, we, the people who make the sites and want the business, will find a way to support those browsers simply because we know people still use it.

Elledan, IE does suck for its intergration, this is true. But you will notice, specific versions work better depending on the version of windows. IE8 works for $417 with XP, but IE6 and 7 work just fine. IE8 works really well however with Windows 7. Now you will always have a wonderful, This program has stopped responding error message now and than, but most users of Windows have already accepted that fate, albeit, I have yet to have that problem with Windows 7 and IE8.

I still dont like IE8, it still has the normal m$ b$ that is a buggy code, but that will be fixed over time. Given m$ attempts lately to actually appease the crowd, im happy with the outcome and welcome more changes and fixes that m$ would not have done in the past between Windows XP SP2 and the launch of Windows 7. They are leaps and bounds from what they brought us with Vista. If they keep up what they have been doing, there may be a slight chance that IE9 will infact have full support for CSS3. We cant judge them the same anymore. Windows 7 re-instilled faith in M$ that alot of people had lost from Vista.

So anyway, its not fair to judge a chicken before it hatches, so, its not fair to judge a browser, before its even seen the light of day!
 
I'm just glad we got a number of alternatives (WebKit, Gecko, Opera) and it's no longer a matter of choosing between two evils (Netscape, IE). I used NS 4.7x years ago, but not because it was such an awesome browser, I just considered it to be less evil than IE 4. Mozilla changed all that. I switched to it with Milestone 16 (M16) :)
