Flow Rates?

I've been looking at various pumps with widely varying flow rates. I plan on making a 1/2" ID cpu only loop but I'm not sure what kind of flow rate I should shoot for. I have been looking at various pumps and I was trying to decide on 66GPH, 145GPH or 190GPH. Any thoughts?
 
I recently helped my friend put together his watercooling system with 1/2" tubing using a Swiftech MCP655 pump. That pump worked great! Makes me want to upgrade my own setup. lol
 
Laing Vario adjustable. It has 5 different flow rates. Highly recommend it.
 
For a cheaper option get the MCP-655 B. Its the Laing Vario fixed at flow rate #5. If you ask around, most people run their vario ~4-5 anyways.

I am running the MCP655-B myself now, and if you have a couple decent speed fans, they will drown out the sound of a single MCP655 set at 5, based on my experience with mine. It's not very noisy. Plus, you do save a few bucks, which can be helpful.
 
yeah, I was leaning towards the MCP555 myself. A friend runs a pond shop though and he wants me to try one of his recommended pumps first. He insists they are as good as an Eheim so i'll give it a try at least.

may i ask what pump ur friend is reffering to? if its the via aqua 1300 DONT GET IT, from my experience it runs quite well but the buzzing sound is unbarable

I can handle the noise, my case sounds like a tornado now with all the fans anyway. I don't know what it is, it's a blank case. I think it's a new brand he's testing.
 
When you go to water cooling hopefully your setup will reduce the extra case fans and noise =)
go with the highest flow rated pump bang for buck or that money can buy. it would be good if the pump has settings for the water flow as well (for future addon blocks example. to allow more flow when u add another block). 145 - 190 GPH should be good enough for a CPU loop.
In other words more cooled water moving thru your rad and water block( no particular order) = lower temps which means nice water cooling setup =)

Oh and could you find out the info of that pump your friend was telling you about?
 
I got the lift numbers, that's it.

The 145GPH is 3/8" fittings only, 50" lift.
The 190GPH is 1/2"fittings and 60" lift
The one he recommended is 260GPH, 1/2" & 3/4" fittings, 6-1/2 feet of lift. I got it but it's physically large in size and i'm not sure about it. Seems kinda big and overkill but i'll try it.

They all are adjustable but AC only. The only DC units he had were WAY overkill. like 25 and 35' head at 50PSI and HUGE flows.

I'm gonna try the 145 probably just to see if it CAN work as the price he can get them for is pretty awesome. Otherwise the 190 will most likely be my main pump if it works out. I also have the 260GPH unit as a last resort but I think (based on it's size compared to the 190) that it's overkill as it's twice as large.

EDIT: The main downfall to these units are they are AC only and they are submersible, not inlines. For the price though, i'll deal with it!
 
My 2cents on this. I have an alphacool 1510 16+ feet of head(6 meters) w/ 1500l/hour at max setting. It goes from 12v-24v and is 21-35db depending on setting. If you put it on something soft it helps reducing the noise. In my system I donh't hear it over my drives and fans. It is currently running on a D-tek block with washer/quad nossel and a thermochill 120.3 and I am getting around 6psi still with a flow rate of of over 2.5gpm. I have had it 2 years now and haven't had a problem (knock on wood).
 
Head is the ability of the pump to make pressure, Flow is it's ability to move volume. You need a good balance of both to make a good setup depending on how restrictive your loop is. I'm gonna try all three and see how/if they work out. I'll go from there!
