Well, my GF 6800 256Mb (non-ultra) finally started to show it's age, once I installed the new Flight Simulator X. I basically had to run everything on low settings in order for me to get a decetn 15fps, whereas in FS2004, I was easily getting 35+.

So, I decided to pull the trigger and I ordered myself a new EVGA 7900GTO 512mb which should be here tomorrow. I am hoping I will see a huge improvement over my 2 year old video card. Just how much, is the question?

Seriously, those of you who want to push your video cards limits, go downlaod the FSX demos from Microsoft's site, and it will have your video cards at their knees. Most people don't think of flight sim as a graphically intensive game, but it is, moreso than any other game out there...go downlaod the demo and see for yourself....

I'll report my findings in the difference tomorrow once the GTO arrives ;)

Odd...only 800mb? That's kinda hard to believe, given the graphics we've seen.

The latest release of America's Army is pushing 3gb, and the demo for Dark Messiah was over 2gb.

Yeah, its because it only has a small teritory in the game compaired to the retail version. I suspect the retail verizon about 8GB+.

But anyway, I was able to run the game pretty much maxed out (1600x1200 8xAA 16xAF) on my SLI 7800GTX 256MB. I'm not sure if it is an SLI supporting game, but i suspect you should be able to run pretty close to that with a 7900GTO. (if not better)

The problem is that once Vista is released, Microsoft will release a DX10 "update" to the game, since it is suppose to be a from the get go a DX10 game. So, you can either wait a month or 2 and see what NIVIDIA has to offer, and how good the G80 is, or you can spend ~$250 on a 7900GTO. I personaly would wait, since i bet you could live with a 6800 just for a little while longer. And mabey you could also wait for the 7900GT to go down in price. But i just thought about it, since the G80 is going to be ridiculously expensive on release, it makes it a hard decision. (~$450 for the "GT" model...we will see) Also, those DX10 improvements may not be worth the extra wait or the money, and you could always wait till next gen.

Also, since i am a Flight Simmer myself, i am definitelly going to stick with FS2004 (doing a swap between them, having them both at the same time)

There is no disputing that the 7900GTO will be a major upgrade for you. But i say wait a little bit, unless you absoluty need to play FSX on launch (which i completely understand).

Basicaly is comes down to this.

-But the 7900GTO, Get great framerate now, and play the game pretty well. (my pick, i know i "flip, flopped)

- wait a little bit, see what happens, and mabey see if other people like the improvements that DX10 bring in FSX. (and i dont realy think they will be worth it, just yet, mabey 2nd gen DX10(year or so), or the refreshers in 5-6 months from now)

I won't wait because DX10 cards will be too expensive. I already ordered the GTO, and I got it at a good price. I needed a new card anyways.

Also, no need to wait. Even though the release date is the 18th of October, some Best Buys and Wal-Marts have already leaked copies on the shelves. I managed to already pick up a retail version of FSX Deluxe Version, right off the shelf at my local Best Buy here in Canada.

I was lucky though, because I hear they are hard to come by, since the release date is still officially a week and a half from now, but if you go on the flightsim.com and avsim.com forums you'll see that Best Buys and Wal-Marts across Canada and the US, have already started selling them. only a few though, so it's hit and miss trying to find a BB or WM that does sell them.

And yes, the retail deluxe version is taking up over 8Gb...12Gb actually, for a full install on my drive.
