so... hard drive are the slowest piece in a computer. look at ipods, with a fair amoutn of space to store just musics. why dont companies make flash hdd for the pc? make it faster than a spinning type hd? or is it just too expensive to produce a 200gb flash hdd.
 
1) Yes, it would be much more expensive to put 250GB of flash into a hard drive.
2) Flash is even slower than a decent hard drive.
3) Flash has a limited number of read/write cycles it can go through.
4) At the current size of the chips, fitting 100GB into a 3.5" hard disk would be impossible.
 
Mostly severely limited lifetimes. They can usually only go through like 100000 read/write cycles before they start to fail. OS operations would use that up pretty quick.
 
Aren't the newer generations of drives gonna include some flash memory in them (50MB) for fast read/write patterns?

Actually, every drive manufacturer around is currently working on "hybrid" hard drives, which include flash memory along with a traditional spinning platter. Such drives are faster, more reliable, and use a small fraction of the power of current drives.

They aren't that much faster (if at all), the point is the lower power usage. They are designed for portable battery powered computers. The drive is basically a HD with built in non-volatile ram. It puts the frequently used files into the flash memory and powers down. If it needs something that isn't in the flash, it spins back up and retrieves it.

Most flash memory is limited to around 25MB/s. As stated, the real reason the manufacturers are making drives with flash in them is to decrease power consumption.

The primary advantage is power consumption. However, they are considerably faster in many cases, such as boot times.

Most flash memory is limited to around 25MB/s.
But with near-zero latency, which means random access is considerably faster.
