Flash Drive vs Mini HD

flash drives use stable memory ie ram type.
Hard disk drives use miniature magnetically wrtten disks.

The mini hard drive comes with all the faults that plauge their bigger siblings: they use more power, can be erased by strong enough magnetic fields, are rather sensitive to shock, can crash, suffer mechanical breakdown etc. Flash on the other hand is very resilient, you can throw it around within reason and it still will work. Flash also uses less power, but I don't think that is a big issue with thumb drives.
However, they do tend to be faster but that is rapidly changing. Also one on one, the hard drives are usually cheaper than a flash drive
 
Flash memory is not affected by magnetic fields(though if it is placed in a strong AC electromagnetic field then it may get fucked up, but just by induced current, not from the magnetism). For most cases I would recommend a flash drive over a magnetic drive. Only in cases when there is going to be a good deal of constant rewriting would I recommend a magnetic drive(due to the limited rewrites of a flash drive).

The hard drive based thumb drive can be erased or at least corrupted by strong magnetic fields such as placing it on an unshielded subwoofer, having motors around hmm maybe even those force feedback joysticks. Flash drives are usually unaffected by normal magnetic radiation (but I am sure you can generate a big enough field to damage it)

bzzzt wrong. A hard drive is written by very intense very strong magnetic fields. In order to bulk erase a drive one must generate a magnetic field that strong over the whole drive. This is about 10 Gauss. You know MRI scanners? when they show 'em on TV, they depict them sucking metal objects from 10 feet away through someone's arm or something. That's a fairly accurate depiction of how strong the magnetic fields are. That's one Gauss.

So in other words, you *could* erase them with strong enough magnetic fields, but it wouldn't be real practical.
