Flash Drive Speeds

Ok got into an argument with someone over the speeds of Flash Drive speeds.
Is it true that: 1) the bigger the capacity the slower they go and 2) even if a drive says USB 2.0 on it, it still could read/write at different rates???

I always thought if it says 2.0 then it goes at 2.0 speeds and that the capacity doesn't make a differece as to the speed transfer!

Help?!?

ps i got a new flash disk bet on this answer so make it goo :)

Dude!
The usb 2.0 drives are fast and portable.
I'm sure you could bench them. But why?

A. Would you even notice?
B. Let's say the the 32mg size was faster. Wouldn't you rather have a larger capacity?
C. If you and your friend end up in a fisticuffs death match over this would you send me a video?

J/K. Sorry I didn't have any specifics for you. I am sure that some transfer better than others given the different types of flash RAM out there. But look at what else you are up against.

A. Different usb controllers
B. Cable latency (If you are using them)
C. Chips, and I am assuming that companies just buy bulk chips thus further limiting any consistent bench results. <====== I could be wrong.

Anyways. I use sandisk 1gig usb 2.0 I love it. It's much faster than the usb 1.0 i had.

Pny attache 256MB - 2MB/second xfer rate (usb 2.0)
Sandisk Microcruiser - 512MB - 2MB/second (usb 2.0)

What are other people seeing?

The 2005 edition of Sandra has flash benchmarking. :)

I use a 1GB Cruzer-mini, and 800MB in under 2 mins is fast enough for me. ;)

I don't think there's a correlation between size and speed.

There's a few different technologies for implementing flash memory, and the speeds will vary substantially. You can find benchmark sites if you search.

Writing to flash memory is a very slow process; reading from it is faster but not amazingly so. I mean, reading can be twice as fast as writing, but it's nowhere near as fast as accessing even a good hard drive!

As such, you'll have a hard time finding a CF or SD card that keeps up with USB 2.0 speeds.
