I bought an 18.1Gb segate cheetah drive on ebay, and one of those multi-plug adapters so i can use my 50 pin scsi ultra wide II controller on it.

The compaqs drive array controller says its there and spins the drive, shows me the ID and all fine. I went into Win2k server and looked under my computer... Only my other 3 drives showed up.

I pulled the other two drives (hot swap bay in front) and turned the computer on with windows xp home setup in the cd drive. It loaded, and showed the drive , but instead of its name and size, i get a "(drive not accessible)". This is frustrating, considering i spent 35$ on the drive.

I made a win98 boot floppy, ran FDISK off that and formatted the scsi as a FAT32 partition. I then stuck in my scsi drive that had windows 2000 server (ID0). It loaded, and under my computer, i did not see the 18.1GB cheetah listed. Also, winxp is still not cooperating with the drive, But NT4.0 will try to format it, but wont format the 18.1gb drive as a whole (doesnt support drives that large).

Under dos, i can scandisk the whole thing, copy junk onto it, and read from it without any problems.

What is going on here?
 
After 4 hours of messing around (it takes a LONG time to spin up 5 SCSI drives on a compaq going through restart after restart) i figured it out. with one 18gb partition, it has LBA problems. I set the main partition to 56mb, and the otther to about 18gb. Windows now recognizes the drive.

I should have known, since all of the other scsi drives are this way (36mb dos partition, 4gb secondary partition)
By the way, this computer is a 1996 comcrap proliant 5000


Another compaq tidbit for propriatery technology...

edit: After restarting, the drive is now inaccessible
