Hey guys, please tell me my 1.7 s478 Celeron isn't junk?! I mean, I know it's junk, but please tell me I don't have to junk it over some bad cache!

I ran Hot CPU Tester Pro 4 on it and it passes all the tests except for the L2 Cache test!

BACKGROUND: The PC was coming up on some BSODs everynow and then with a error that reads somethng like "NMI: Parity Check/Memory Parity Error". Ran memtest overnight with no probs, so I tested w/ Prime95 and it fails within minutes.

Here's the info the the CPU and mobo. Is there anything that can be done or does the CPU need sent back? It's not even a year old, never OC'd, bought retail.




The error it (Hot CPU Tester) reports is:
L1 Cache: Finished without error
L2 Cache: Error:CPU 0: L1 Cache data does not match, lpByte1=0, lpByte2=0

Any suggestions?
 
if its retail cpu you can still send it back to intel and get a replacement as they have 3 year warranty
you might even get a faster speed cpu too
i onces sent in my p4 1.6 ghz willamette cpu and i got back a 2.0A ghz northwood cpu
 
sounds good, but I'm trying to avoid the down time if possible. Is their any fix to my problem? Anything worth trying?
 
Well, it's normally rather difficult fixing phyiscal processor problems (then again, what other kinds of problems do we have with them). So unless you can pop it open and work around in one, I highly doubt there's anything you can do.

Heat isn't an issue..right?

 
I don't have the PC so it's difficult to do as much with it as I'd like. I'm getting ready to try MBM or Speedfan on it to see it'll give me some temps. The failures occur at all times, including idling, so I'm assuming it's not a heat issue. It's only used for AIM and email.

I notices on my BIOS optioins that I can disable the use on my CPU's cache. If her BIOS has this option, it seems like it'd work around the problem adequately.

I'm working on the PC remotely so I can't exactly reboot and check out the BIOS myself. As soon as the owner has time, I'm going to walk her through it on the phone.
 
dude i would not recommend diabling the cpu cache as it will dramatically slow down ur system
if ur just wanting to disable it to verify if it is the cache then its ok but not if ur gonna disable it as a work around for having errors
