Should we add something to the FAQ deally on when flag combo's are producing the best PPD currently? -adv/big etc.

Seems to me times change on the offerings of WU's to which flag setting produce the highest PPD form peoples rigs. This is a moving target, needing to be updated from time to time.

Example now the best flagging is big packets with no -adv methods flag.

Yea/Na? How the heck do we track this? Who cares anyways? Who gets stuck on this? Not going to matter when v6 comes out?
 
it would help me out alot, i need someone to hold my hand :)
i have no clue what flags do, or which to use, i'd love to see a FAQ

You are right that it's a moving target, but not everybody (duh, me... ) realizes when the target has moved ! Until this week, I was there leaving -advmethods on every box like I set it up 6 months ago.... All it will take is for QMD's to come back & it's a new ball game all around, right ? (It's like wanting to go back to the sock hop :rolleyes: or my first girlfriend :D) Let alone client version 6..... , gpu's, and PS3's !

I've noticed that our "Welcome noob" threads often generate a lot of usable info that then dies with the thread.

If you take a peek at the roos' site , you will see threads that address these issues... but your info better be good ! With as many experienced folders as we have here, we can do it even better --- I suggest that we start a series of threads that cover Windows, linux, & Mac, with initial suggestions by experienced folders in each area & let the experience accumulate and spread to our noobs. I think many [H]ardFolders have great info, but don't want to be put on the spot to back it up if they post it. So as the targets move, so should our "advice columns" suggest adaptations to our configurations & hardware emphasis without being a confrontational arena.

King, I agree the basics are there, but addressing the moving target of how to maximize point production for the currently available batch of WU requires some realtime updating from people accumulating the knowledge.... otherwise as a team we are ignoring the hard-won experience of our "elders". Yes it's possible to deduce & try & fail until you get the best results, but I think that education is better.

If I already 'yes' stuff in the config, do I still need to add the flag into the filename?

Also, how come flags don't work unless it's on a shortcut?

All the info can be added to the faqs and guides easily enough, however the info needs to be sent to me to do so.

1. With the most recent console (5.04 ) client, more of the flags ARE handled in the config questions. But some of the flags like -forceasm, -local (if needed) , and -verbosity x (extra info only) must be added to the command line if not running as a service, or added to the registry entry if it wasn't included in the original command that originated the service entry.

2. I don't use a shortcut to run FAH, so I don't know the answer to this :(

@ King- problem as stated is it's a moving, albeit a slow moving target. The FAQ's do not cover -adv either. In my opinion the -adv flag is the most misused flag there is.

@ Pig- you need to edit the registry to pop the flags in there. Info should be listed in the FAQ's/

Or you can use this: http://devel.bluetentacle.co.uk/dc/pkfsct/index.htm, it's a great little tool that saves having to muck in the registry at all.

As for the flag thing, if people can come to a consensus on what the best current config is, I'm sure we can add it to the [H] Central as kind of a "Folding Conditions" item like a weather forecast.
 
All I know is that I'm currently using all the major flags like -forceasm, -advmethods, and big packets on my 2 dual core machines and all I get are the dumb 77x proteins. Yet my brother's 2100+ config'ed the same way has gotten 2 of the new 600 pointers, so its really just a crapshoot imo.

 
Oops, I didn't know the advanced flag was hurting me... Thanks for the incidentally separate thread relating to this.
 
I am with p[H] here.... [H]orde Central belongs to you, the team....what ever you want in there, we put in there....just send us content.

We can perhaps start some discussion threads on each flag, what they do, how to use them, when to use them and so on... Keep the threads on track, and we can link them into the FAQ. Sound good?
 
Well since you guys asked for it, I added a heading for "Folding Forecast" to the [H]orde Central, so if you guys want to run on a discussion of the current optimal configuration for F@H go for it and I'll add the consensus from there.
