ok now let me get this straight . . . . Everyone here seems to agree that EAC is the way to go for ripping our own cds, but to make them flac, I need to rip them to wav and then use a flac front-end? I hope I am wrong here cuz mp3 takes less steps.

Please correct me one way or the other
 
no eac can go to flac without a frontend

make it point to the flac.exe
make sure the extension is .flac
i use the string "-best -T "title=%t" -T "artist=%a" -T "album=%g" -T "date=%y" -T "tracknumber=%n" -T "genre=%m" %s"
i use 'delete wav after compression'
 
You just tell EAC to use FLAC for compression rather than the MP3 encoder, and any arguments it should pass to the FLAC executable when compressing files.

mad clown, I did a quick search for a thread that should've answer my question, apparently I didn't go deep enough,.
 
well I didn't see how to make EAC encode in flac for me, so I did the 2 step process using a flac front end.

Given space saving vs. quality I give it a no-go.
flac sounded good but compared to its wav counterpart, on a side by side basis, it just didn't compete.

I understand that any compression of any kind will degregate quality, but flac claims lossless and I can't agree with them.

unless I am missing something, and someone please speak-up, flac to me is dead.
 
The whole point of FLAC is that it doesn't throw out any audio information, period. Think of it as a compression algorithm just like ZIP or RAR, except the algorithm is optimized for the unique characteristics of audio files. ZIP and RAR are lossless compression algorithms--if they weren't, then your files would get corrupted when you extract and run them. FLAC and other lossless codecs are exactly like that.

Any sound quality difference is in your head. I can say that with confidence because the two files (WAV and FLAC) are identical down to the last bit of each byte at the point of playback, because during compression no information was thrown out!

Sorry placebo effect. I have downloaded large flac files, converted them wav, then to APE(just cause APE has better compression) and the result is the exact same sound.
 
Time to look up abx comparison. Foobar2000 has a plugin or something to do it.
