Fixing poor connectivity

I have an E3000 router and a Bigfoot 1103 Wireless N wifi adapter on my desktop. The router is a floor above and a couple of rooms away. After trying to move both a few times to get them to connect at all, I managed to get it to connect at 42% signal strength over the 5GHZ band, and speedtest.net gives a result roughly half as fast as what my laptop can get in the same room.

What are my options to improve the connectivity? Is it a good idea to buy adapters for the wifi card to use larger antennas, or to mod the E3000 for external antennas? Will installing DD-WRT be worth the risk?
