well, i looked aruond and couldnt really find any information on this. was probably looking in the wrong places. anyway, i have this 20gig hdd thats clicking, and has the usual symptons of problems booting, reading the disk, etc. so its definitley got some issues with it. i was curious if anyone knew how to repair this. i really have nothing to lose, so getting it open and risking scratching the actual disk (if its not yet) is no worry to me. so hopefully someone knows how to repair this, it would be nice to get something out of the extra drive instead of tossing it. thanks.

the drive is starting to fail if i am correct. i had this happen to me recently and I RMA'd it. If you need to get data off of it, i once heard of a trick to put the drive in it's anti static bag and seal it shut with something, then put it in a zip lock bag and put it in the freezer overnight. i heard it somewhere on this board if i remember correctly and it's sortof a temporary ghetto rig to get the drive spinning for a couple hours while you take your data off of it and transfer it to a different drive. that's what you're going to have to do.

thanks for the idea about the freezer. ya, i already know its failing, what the deal is, it was a clients hard drive that i recently replaced for him, i was thinking if it was possible i could get into it with a screw drive and maybe tighten some screws and it would work like new again.

get you stuff backed up asap. I've had 2 40gig and a 80gig maxtor hdds do this exact thing. First 40 died the day after it starting clicking.

the clicking is normal more or less
the fact that its doing it alot is not
and is a sign of failure

the drive "clicks" whenever it recalibrates
which it will do when it initializes or whenever there is a read\write error
if its doing it alot, that probably means there are alot of read\write errors
you can check its power and power connection
you can check the data cable, and run chkdsk to repair the filesystem but if it continues it will eventually become unreliable

so no, there isnt any screw to tighten

If it's out of warranty, hit it on the side with the ball end of a screwdriver. If that doesn't work, beat it severely with something larger.
