Can the patent system really be overhauled? Everyone knows it needs it, we all just can’t agree on how. This guy’s commentary on the situation is rather enlightening.

In the past, patents were almost universally regarded as essential to the economy. By rewarding innovation, they created an incentive for inventors to invent more. Yet more than any other time in our history, the patent system now is under fire, and enormous change has been afoot to "fix" it.

It should be simple really, if you can show a working product with documentation of what it does, you can patent it. Period.

Getting patents on things you did not invent is wrong in my eyes. Like patents on genes, what's up with that? So what if you mapped it, you still did NOT invent it and all living things share it so how can you say you own it?

I do believe there is a new current requirement established last year? Someone correct me if I am wrong. But you have to show a working model of your concept... you can't just sit there all day long dreaming up something and filing a patent for it

I may be wrong, but that is what I was told when I went to file a patent and that I should hurry to file under the new requirement deadline.
