Fix for AMD problems in games?

I've recently gone back to a few older games such as Doom 3. I've tried playing the game and using mods but I have recently found out that the cause of most of my problems is the AMD GPU. I am running a 6870 and I've encountered many AMD based problems. Things like disabling catalystai and such did not come to mind when I purchased the card. I am now wondering if there are other technical problems with that will give me a huge headache in the future. I'm seriously considering the switch to Nvidia.

Yeah, AMD+OpenGL is a pain. With Doom 3 I've been told that changing the exe or the profile with RadeonPro that it'll fix the issues with mods but you lose anti-aliasing.
