Now, I have an idea for a computer

mobo: ASUS Crosshair II Formula NVIDIA nForce 780a
graphics: dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295
audio: Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Prof. Series
memory: 16Gb G. Skill MQ Quad Kit
power supply: Corsair HX1000 1000W
harddrive: WD Caviar Green 1Tb
DVD Drive: LG 8x Super Multi Blue-Ray Writer
Case: Lian Li PC-P80
Cooling: No clue
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940 3.0 GHz

Being a complete and utter newb in the computer world, I have no idea what I should be looking for in a cooling unit and have no idea on how I should judge what is needed for a computer. Please Help! :(
 
what cpu? because that will be a big deciding factor on what cooling to use..
 
Any particular reason why you chose the AMD route instead of the Intel route?

If you're interested in an i7 build, I could provide a few suggestions...

Yeah I am actually have an idea for an Intel if that works out better for me

mobo: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX
cpu: Intel Core i7 940
graphics: dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295
audio: Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Prof. Series
memory: Corsair XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-pin DDR3 SDRAM
power supply: Corsair HX1000 1000W
harddrive: WD Caviar Black 1TB
DVD Drive: LG 8x Super Multi Blue-Ray Writer
Case: Lian Li PC-P80
Cooling: No clue
 
I would -

get an asus p6t - the non dlx version still allows three way sli and crossfire
get a 920 you save a ton of money and they oc to atleast 3.8 with ease
6 GB of Corsair ddr3 1600

the rest is fine but why spend the money on 2 295? get three 260 gtx's in three way sli :)

Motherboard - Good
CPU - Good
Graphics - Good
Audio - Good
Memory - Any reason why you need 12GB over 6GB?
Power Supply - Good
Hard Drive - I wouldn't use a 1TB as my main drive. I'd get something with a few less platters (i.e. 150GB Raptor or 640GB Black) with another drive (probably the WD Green) to use for storage.
DVD Drive - Good
Case - You can go with the Antec 1200 and save yourself $150, unless you really like that Lian-Li Case. It's a great case by the way, but a bit too much for my taste.
Cooling - As always, I recommend the Thermalright Ultra 120.

a thermaltake big typhoon VX will work but not recommended

xigamatek s1283 is perfect for the phenom II 940 but do not know if it will fit in that case since havent see a picture of it in a while
a TRUE is the best one to get and again dont know if it will fit in that case..

the phenom II doesnt run as hot as expected.. but it has a really low max cpu temp.. i currently run a thermaltake big typhoon VX @ 3.5ghz 1.424v idles at 35C full load at 48-53C depending on the ambient temp.. though i would not recommend this cooler due to how loud it is..

also your better off with SLI gtx 285's then running dual gtx 295's unless you plan to use them for folding@home GPU folding..


ok and seriously i7 people get the hell off your high horses.. some people dont feel like throwing 600-700 dollars plus at a system to play basic games.. and i7 isnt any better at playing games then a phenom II 940 unless you feel like wasting money on triple sli.. so grow the hell up and quit being fan boys..

How much would the Thermalright Ultra 120 cost, and where would I get it for a good price.
 
thermalright ultra sells anywhere from 50-80 dollars depending if you get it with a fan.. its starting to get harder and harder to find it though.. ncixus has it for 58 without a fan and 78 with a fan..
